After departing on April 26th 1865, the PS Sultana made her way through the river. Near 2AM on April 27th, a thunderous explosion lit up the vessel. Rapidly, 3 more explosions followed and a raging fire started. The steam shot up, blowing off her funnels, with the port one flying off and crushing the pilothouse, and the starboard funnel blew itself to pieces. Fire raged on the bow, and made its way aft. People panicked, and rushed to her two lifeboats, which was nowhere near enough for the around 2,000 people on board. As the fire spread, many leaped overboard to flee but drowned or froze. Her decks started to splinter before collapsing, and eventually her hull burned, flooded and sank. Charred remains went adrift and were buried over time. Of the 2,137 people on board, an estimated 1,100 to 1,800 perished in the disaster, making it the worst US Maritime disaster in history.
