Time to work on a new level I guess.
If I understand correctly then you got Xiphorrhea (the ability to break wooden barriers) but not yet the upgrade to destroy brick walls.
After you get Xiphorrhea look for the switch in the same room to unlock paths to the left and right. Both need to be challenged as they will give you one ability each. This can be done in either order.
One part where I've seen some people struggle: When you enter through the water gate you can go to the right and down, even though it looks like a wall. That's also the path where you get the brick breaking ability.
