PS Onyx

The PS Onyx was a paddle steamer tender designed specifically to tender to the upcoming vessels of the Gem Line. The Onyx was most famous for tendering to the RMS Pyrope on it’s ill-fated third voyage. The Onyx was sold off in 1899, due to being aged and outdated. However, she was bought by Gem Line again in 1904, after the failure of the PS Agate, and given an extensive refit to bring her up to the higher standards. She would once again be sold off in 1922, and replaced by the SS Onyx II. The PS Onyx 1 was planned to be broken up in June 1940, but due to war, this was delayed. Sadly, on 28th August, 1940, she was struck by a bomb. The Onyx was sunk within minutes, but was raised in 1945 and scrapped.
