Excelsior Class [Abandoned]

描述
No longer being updated!
Due to upgrading my PC I can no-longer update this workshop item (have tried some of the workarounds, but to no avail). I am more than happy to re-upload a empty shell version if people want a more usable ship they could do combat with.

About:
The Excelsior Class from Star-Trek, this features the refit-style Impulse Engines on the Saucer as well as the Nacelles, but without the flared secondary hull. Thanks to Jaropis a.k.a Benoniy for advising and helping with minor design changes.

I don't have a set plan for this build, it's an on-going project, with elements being added, removed or re-worked.

Size Info:
WARNING: this is a very big ship, I usually build with shadows set to 'disabled', to improve performance, though this isn't strictly necessary. This does dent my sim-speed a fair amount, even more when converted to ship. I got pretty poor sim-speed on my old 4th Gen i5, so if you're on an older / lower-performance machine you can probably still load this but I'd advise against it. Newer CPUs should handle fine.
Graphics wise, I get around 40-50fps on my 1060, with mostly high settings - turning off shadows makes things look a little odd, but massively improves performance due to the sheer size of the grid and weird shadows that occur.

The registered block-count is 269,401 however this is only the count of the Engineering hull, it does not include the block counts of the attached subgrids afaik (Saucer, Nacelles, etc.)

Dimensions: (approx.)
  • 125 blocks wide (saucer diameter)
  • 71 blocks tall
  • 317 blocks long

Current features:
  • Ejectable warp-core (sequence controlled by timer blocks)
  • Ten-Forward style bar / lounge area
  • A shuttle-bay in the aft, a "cargo handling zone" / main shuttle-bay in the bottom of the secondary-hull. Two probe-bays located in the neck area.
  • Four cargo bays in the sides of secondary-hull
  • Subgrid bridge, accessible by "turbo-lift"
  • Warp-coil decoration in the nacelles
  • There are air-vents, some areas should be pressurizable.
  • Saucer Section-Separation (currently this is incidental of my work-around for the ingame shapes limit. I will add timer-blocks to properly sequence this later)

Planned features:
  • Gravity-generator drive (I don't know how feasible this is, given the primary and secondary hulls are not a single-grid)
  • Some "turbolift" or other mechanism to get between the two hulls.
  • Scripts or some other method of control to allow piloting from the bridge (and also to allow control of thrusters across the ship - as separate saucer / engineering hull makes this difficult)
  • Lighting in most areas. These will likely be left off by default, able to be turned on by buttons (performance saving measure)
  • Scripts for air-lock control, more fitting LCD's etc.

General Information
Comments & Criticism welcome!
I don't have a particular build-order in mind nor overall plan for the ship. I tend to build, remove and re-work areas as I find my interest drawn to them. My intent is to end up with something which has well-decorated, but not super functional areas such as the sub-gridded bridge and main engineering, alongside rooms and areas of the ship that make it actually functional and (in-theory) survival ready. I'm very aware that creating this in survival would be a herculean effort and that almost no server would permit it, but it's still something I want it to have.

In recent updates I've been re-vamping the corridors and re-painting some areas to have a more consistent theme that brings in elements of both TOS design and TNG influences (whilst trying to avoid large swaths of grey that I've ended up building in some areas).
On my list of rooms to revisit are the med-bay and transporter rooms found in the saucer. I'm also likely to give main engineering a re-work at somepoint, possibly giving it more detail via use of sub-grid, similar to the bridge.

Thanks :)

They're pretty simple builds, but they're fun to fly around such a big ship and occasionally are useful when I'm trying to position sub-grids to be attatched (like the deflector)
