ColorPix Pixel Font + Image Converter

描述
ColorPix is a high resolution pixel font with accompanying image converter designed to display pictures on LCDs with high color fidelity and detail.

This mod contains two fonts, ColorPix and ColorPixAlpha. ColorPix supports 32768 (32^3) colors, compared to 512 supported by the Monospace font. ColorPixAlpha supports 4096 colors with 8 transparency (alpha) levels per color.

The characters in both fonts are true pixels (1 x 1) as opposed to the giant 37 x 37 pixel characters in the Monospace font. This allows much finer detail to be displayed in the same space on LCDs. Note that Space Engineers does not allow text longer than 100,000 characters, so keeping your images width x height under that number is required if you want the full images to display.

Here is the web-based image converter designed to work with ColorPix fonts. It will also work with the Monospace font.
Open Image Converter[dhstatic.s3-website.us-east-2.amazonaws.com]
Works in Chrome 80 / Edge 81.
DOES NOT WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER.

Feel free to change and redistribute both the fonts and the image converter, just mention your boy Dan please.

Enjoy!

LOL! No worries Dan. Back in the day I would have grasped it in a nanosecond... (nanoseconds didn't exist back then LOL) but my brain 55 yrs old now and I subject it to a very healthy (unhealthy?) amount of God's Miraculous Green so things move a little slower upstairs!

@BuzzedBear Anytime!
I apologize for the technicality of the explanation.

I'll see if I can wrap my head around the math. Thanks for the xplanation!

@BuzzedBear here's a more thorough answer, based on some actual in-game testing (yay scientific method). Looks like the exact limit on text length is... you guessed it, 100,000 characters. The tricky part is, each row of pixels in your source image requires an extra newline character to denote the end of that row and start the next. So the maximum size that your image can be pixel wise is (W + 1) * H = 100,000.

The converter was using CRLF line endings (two characters, max image size (W + 2) * H = 100,000), but I tested LF line endings (one character) and they work in game. I modified the converter to use LF line endings, so max size is now (W + 1) * H = 100,000.

Also added a button to the input row that scales the image to the maximum allowed size (maintaining aspect ratio).

Thanks again for the question, that's the first step of the scientific method :)

@BuzzedBear good question, albeit tricky to answer. Since "images" displayed using pixel fonts are actually text strings, it really depends on the number of characters allowed in the string. Keen has set a hard limit of around 100,000 characters ("pixels"), which means the multiplied dimensions of your image (width times height) cannot exceed that number or the string will be truncated by the game. The converter will display a warning in that case, but will still output the full string in case Keen sees fit to increase this limit in the future.

You don't have to reduce images prior to running them through the converter though - just enter new values in the input width and/or height fields at the top of the converter interface, and the converter will resize the image for you.

Hope this is helpful - thank you for the question!

Hey Dan - I am curious because I haven't figured this out completely - What's the maximum size that an image can be pixel-wise? I have some pics that I used with Whips Image converter that I wanted to put with your mod - but I can't seem to use the whole picture any longer. If I knew the max dimensions limit for the Source image I could reduce it to that before running through your Mod. Am I making any sense? It seems at the moment I can only 'crop' any given image.

Per suggestion from ScippieDippie//, the converter has been updated with a textarea for older browser versions that do not support the clipboard API.

@Morpheus, this may resolve your issue with Firefox, looks like there were some criteria (permissions) required for using the clipboard API in Firefox specifically. When you get a chance, will you try it again and let me know if it works for you now?

Thanks all for your help and suggestions thus far!

@BuzzedBear glad you are enjoying it - makes the development totally worth it! I feel you on the crap internet connection - I was stuck on dialup until I was in my 20s. If I do make an .exe version, you'll be the first to know!

@ScippieDippie// that's an easy addition, might do that today. Thank you for the recommendation!

@Morpheus I was afraid that might be the case - thank you for the heads up. I don't personally use FF, can you give me any further details on it? Maybe open the devtools and let me know if you're seeing any javascript errors?

Doesn't work with Firefox.

Why not put a output field in a converter page? It doesn't work for me, because the result is not being loaded in clipboard.
Great mod either way.
