VSS is more of a "heavy submachinegun" - large caliber and low accuracy (MOA) made it not unuseful for long-range sniping. So it is an automatic assault rifle for short-range fights. The damn VSS in Vintorez literally means Special sniper rifle. What do you mean it's not a sniper rifle? Whereas the AS in AS VAL means Special automatic.
