Particle butterlies and fireflies to add more "life" to your worlds

Hi all. So we know Medieval Engineers needs more of a sense of "life" in it. This mod brings a bit of that to the world. Using particles (and Equinox's time-of-day script), I've created two flower blocks that spawn butterflies during daylight & fireflies at night. The butterflies flap their wings and flit around, and the fireflies float lazily about, glowing off and on, just as real ones.

The Flower Blocks
Baby's Breath -- Place this in the ground to create a 20-meter radius circle where butterflies will spawn & fly around during daytime.

Calla Lily -- Place this in the ground to create a 40-meter radius circle where fireflies will spawn & light up during the evening and night hours.

You find these flowers using Treasure Maps. There is about a 1/4 chance of finding a plant in each treasure chest you open. Feedback on this ratio very welcome!

You can mix & match these flowers. If you place both in the same area, you get butterflies in the day & fireflies at night. Also, you can rotate each flower before planting it to determine how bright or dull it will appear. (So you can make the flowers very prominent, or hidden among the grasses.)

Big future plans for this mod! Right now these flowers work anywhere. But I'm hoping to use the game code to make them work only in the right biomes. If I can, then I can add many more things, maybe even Will-o-the-Wisps that appear in forests at night.

KNOWN ISSUE: The butterfly particles disappear if the flower that spawns them is not in your character's field of view. I am trying to work with devs & scripters to find a fix. The best workaround is just to have multiple Baby's Breath planted in different places in your field.

Oh I can't wait to see this mod in my game! I had a mod similar to this in ARK and I just loved sitting on the balcony at night - thanks for this mod!! :healthyhearthling:

For the underwater chests, if you take that map and store it in a chest or bookshelf, then grab it back out, it will generate a new location for the treasure. Not an elegant fix, but if you know where you are on the map, and where the water is, you can recycle the map enough times that you get a direction and distance that should be on land.

I've asked peaceman about the treasure chests appearing underwater a while ago, he said that the positioning for the treasures is hard coded. I've found a way to get the chests anyway, it will require your death though, so I recommend having a bed on your ship where you can respawn: When you're swimming, as soon as your stamina drops to zero, you will sink like a rock. When you've reached the ocean floor, the chest will appear and float up, but you will drown. After you've respawned, you can simply loot the chest and your corpse, which will be floating as well.

Hey Morpheus. Those are all fantastic ideas. The butterfly amount is tricky. I found that unless I upped the number quite high, the randomization of their appearance would mean it could be hard to see any at all. I'll keep looking at it. I *love* the idea of dragonflies, and I agree about trying to randomize the firefly glow a bit. Those are particles, and we have pretty good tools for adjusting them. It will just be a matter of trial-and-error. And also I love the idea of the birds overhead flying by from a distance. I think that would be a nice effect. The trouble with that is how to realistically tie that to a "plant" block. Making any particle appear requires an actual block placed in the ground. Would be so much easier if it could work off the biome or off of a specific voxel.

BTW I wonder if birds could be done at a distance? It wouldn't require great detail, maybe only require a silhouette, and could be done in 2D. The fireflies look great, but there are too many butterflies in my humble opinion. Maybe instead of so many butterflies, some could be dragonflies, and others could be bees? Just a thought. I do have a question about the fireflies, are they particles that follow a set path and light up randomly or like an animated gif looping 1 or 2 seconds? If it's the former, is it possible to add a variable to the glow so the glow is not exactly 1 second for every firefly. A little variable would help to make it look more organic. Cool mod regardless.

Hey trighap, thanks much for the feedback. With the Water mod so popular I should talk with the mod maker to see if he can fix it so that chests won’t spawn underwater! As for the frequency of getting the plants, thanks much for that, I’m still trying to balance it out between too much & not enough. I’ll look at other ways to make it too. Oh, I’d love things like birds, rabbits, squirrels etc. Trouble is, bigger creatures look worse & worse as 2D particles.

Came back to mention a small issue. I had enough maps in my inventory to come up with 16 treasure maps. Only 4 of them were NOT covered by the water mod. Of the four I did get, all had Lavender, but none of Baby Breath or Calla Lily. I am not sure using Treasure maps is in the best interest of this mod.

P.S., how about something like Eagles or Rabbits, etc., which WOULD work in a snow biome. Just tossing that idea out.
