The Alters Review

This game is a masterclass for AAA companies on how to make (and price) a game properly. Video games can be a form of art, but not all achieve that status—The Alters is nothing short of a masterpiece that truly does.

Mechanically, this is a single-player-only experience (remember those?), and we have the developers to thank for that choice. We desperately need more games like this. The Alters combines survival gameplay with base management and personal relationship mechanics, creating something truly special.
The story is fantastic—a profound sci-fi journey of self-discovery that explores how simple decisions in your life can be incredibly impactful. The narrative delves into serious themes involving genetics and quantum computing, creating a thought-provoking experience that respects the player's intelligence.

What truly sets this game apart is its choice system. The decisions you make genuinely impact the outcome of the game, and some of these choices are profoundly challenging. The game presents ethical dilemmas that put your soul and beliefs to the test, forcing you to confront difficult questions about identity, morality, and what it means to be human. These aren't simple "good vs. evil" choices—they're complex moral puzzles that will stay with you long after you've finished playing.

The audio design deserves special praise. The original music is excellent, perfectly complementing the game's atmosphere, while the sound design creates an immersive world that draws you in completely. The dialogs between characters are exceptionally well-thought-out, with each conversation feeling authentic and meaningful rather than just exposition dumps.

I heartily recommend this game to anyone wanting not just a game, but a work of art and a journey like no other that you can experience. This is what gaming should aspire to be.

Frostpunk 2 is a solid game for fans of city-building and survival strategy. However, it's not Frostpunk. The soul of the original feels absent here. By shifting its perspective to a much larger scale, it has lost much of its unique identity. In the first game, every decision weighed heavily; the struggle for survival was intimate and deeply personal. In contrast, Frostpunk 2 places more focus on politics and the "big picture," making individual lives feel like mere numbers in a broader system.

Losing a few people is no longer a tragedy—it's just part of the game. This detachment significantly dulls the emotional impact that defined the original. If you're expecting the same tight, pressure-filled gameplay and emotional depth as the first Frostpunk, you'll likely be disappointed.

That said, Frostpunk 2 isn't a bad game. It simply isn't what I expected or wanted from a Frostpunk sequel. While it introduces interesting new elements, the shift in focus leaves something essential behind.
