A reasonably tough, absolutely beautiful top-down adventure in which you seek to topple the mighty Jotun. This game was funded by the Canada Media Fund; judging by this and the glorious Guacamelee!, they clearly have a very good eye for quality games.

Jotun excels on every dimension. Gameplay difficulty is pitched perfectly, and the five bosses are beatable before they can become frustrating. Each boss is preceded by two adventure levels which neatly foreshadow the boss' attacks while you hunt for treasures in them. Movement may initially seem slow but this only adds to the tension of the fight. The sound and visuals are spellbinding - the devotion to Viking mythology in the art and voice acting is palpable. It's hard not to get distracted by the gorgeous hand-drawn boss artwork in particular; the art seems like it was plucked straight from a big budget Disney film. I only noticed two bugs in the whole game, which didn't derail it at all.

Five bosses may seem short but I got about 10 hours out of this game and I think the game felt complete after the final confrontation. Several achievement challenges and the one-hit-kill "Valhalla Mode" exist for extra challenge. Either way Thunder Lotus have created an art and gameplay masterpiece; I absolutely recommend this one if you like boss fights.

Really beautiful piece of software. The selection of wallpapers of all kinds is huge. Everything is simple and intuitive to set up and customise; even creating a new wallpaper is incredibly easy. Why can't all software be this good. Worth every unit of your local currency

The sequel to The Secret of Monkey Island, and arguably the greatest point-and-click adventure ever made. A rare better sequel, it seems to open up a wider, more colourful world to the player while retaining the beautiful art and music and hilarious writing. The art looks gorgeous remastered, or in the original pixelly style (which you can transition to seamlessly). It's rare to see this now but the jokes are hilarious yet clean, though this game leans more heavily on bodily fluids for humour than its predecessor (leaning on bodily fluids isn't something I encourage). Even the developer commentary is charming and fun to listen to as you wander around, though beware of spoilers if you're a first-time player.

The game is generally great to play but some holdovers from the old original game made it a bit frustrating: there was a lot of extra (unskippable to my knowledge) walking around which felt like padding, and the shock of the plot twist was dampened by an INFURIATING final boss. The puzzles were just enough of a stretch; I didn't feel like I was given enough information sometimes but the hint system tells you just enough while still letting you think. I also found some awkward technical problems, the worst being that the game doesn't capture the cursor so clicking off it can derail your experience, and if you're really unlucky you can end up unable to continue the game without re-launching it.

This is a masterful remastering of a classic video game, and as point-and-clicks go nothing really comes close. It has some frustrating issues, but for a fun 10 hours of puzzling and laughs, you can't go wrong with this one.

This is easily a modern platforming classic and it's not hard to see why it's a speedrunning staple. The gameplay is a mild challenge... unless you decide to find all the Trinkets, in which case the challenge (and number of deaths) really ramps up. The art and music perfectly evoke the old consoles, and the game comes with some filters to make you feel like you're playing on an old CRT. That said, one graphics option randomly scrolls the screen up every so often, and while realistic it is extremely distracting - but that's really the only negative. The game might feel a little short if you didn't try to collect everything, but the time trials, challenges new game mode and custom levels provide plenty of replayability. At its price the game is an absolute steal; every platformer fan should own this game.

This is almost the perfect sequel to Overcooked!, serving up more of what made it great while introducing some subtle new mechanics to keep it fresh. This just has everything: more food; more utensils; lots more levels with ramped-up level design; gorgeous free DLC in the form of "Seasonal Update" mini-campaigns; more chefs; a bigger soundtrack and an extremely hard 4* difficulty. All this means it probably has quite a steep difficulty curve for people who never played the original, but I think veterans will also really struggle to hit the 4th star in every level, so be prepared for the same hilarious stress-fest that the original gave you. The story mode built up to a very, very lacklustre boss unfortunately, which spoiled things a bit, but apart from that this is a major upgrade from the already excellent original. My compliments to the devs.

A really spectacular 3D platformer that's big on fun and charm. The most obvious feature of the game is how gorgeous everything looks; the first world is already a beautiful island town, and each new world trumps the previous in terms of visuals, at the same time almost reinventing the game. It all looks and plays a bit like a game for young children early on, but the characters and tone are pitched at a more mature audience. It's a bit jarring at the start but after an hour or so it's easy to get behind. The music and sound design is excellent with mostly great voice acting. Moreover there are dozens of cosmetics and background music remixes which you unlock as you play.

The gameplay is never totally original, or particularly difficult, but so many fun mechanics are thrown together - in a natural way - that I defy you not to have fun with this game. The original may have been on the "short and sweet" side, but the game has just had a "modding update", opening the floodgates for modders to submit their own visuals, levels and chapters, so there is now huge replay value, and players who were a bit disappointed at the relative lack of challenge in the main game can find or make custom content to satisfy them.

ON TOP OF THAT, these amazing developers are also releasing FREE DLC on September 13th (only free on that day), bringing co-op mode, a new world and a new game mode. What I'm trying to say is, this is a game which should be in every game collection, and now is the ideal time to buy.

Well, this game is absolute magic. I already knew most of what would happen from watching a Twitch playthrough, but even so I had an incredible time. This is my favourite Telltale game so far (The Wolf Among Us a close second) and the community will almost always recommend this one, for good reason. The comedy is consistently hilarious without relying on references or shock humour, but it even features one of the most fantastic, emotional death scenes in gaming. This was made in a bit of a golden age for Telltale; we'll see if The Wolf Among Us 2 can outshine it.

The obstacle to a "perfect" rating is that damn engine; minor visual bugs in cutscenes take a little bit away from whatever's happening, the game hung twice on my playthrough and voice lines will sometimes awkwardly interrupt each other. That Telltale haven't tried to patch these things does their games a disservice. But please don't let that stop you; everything else about the game is first class (especially the opening credits; they are MASTERPIECES). If you're looking for a good story, definitely catch a ride with Rhys and Fiona.

***IF YOU WERE A SUPPORTER AND YOU READ THIS, MAKE SURE YOU GOT YOUR FREE KEY!!! CHECK ALL YOUR FOLDERS***

The ultimate high-school lunch break is back in glorious full screen. This is a jazzed-up ~3-in-1 remaster of Captains Forever, Successor and Impostor (demo: captainforever.com) with funkier graphics and sound, more eccentric dialogue, a more fleshed-out story and fancy new parts. These are a straight upgrade from the original online games. Not everything made it from the online games to this one (webcam and ship exports in particular) but I'm holding out hope for these in an update.

Anyway, the games are mostly about blowing up enemy spaceships in your sector, then grabbing their parts and sticking them on your own ship. You can build your ship any way you like, from huge storming behemoth (how I aim to be) down to timid skulking pea-shooter (how I usually end up), as long as you can scavenge for the right parts. It's very strategic and addictive, and creates palpable tension between your budding artistic flair and your urgent need to survive. I highly recommend you at least play the demo; if you like that, this absolutely will not disappoint.

Oh and then there's Impostor, which is in its own dimension of madness and has to be seen to be believed

Wow! This was an almost perfect Metroidvania with gorgeous art (on the level of Owlboy), stupidly catchy music, hilarious writing and an entertaining, satisfying story. Movement was smooth and fun but the player combat not particularly inventive; Guacamelee! does combat much better. Also brimming with waifus, if that's your cup of tea. I think I fell in love with all the characters; you can decide if that's a good thing or not.

The only faults were a couple of crash bugs, and the GUI was noticeably not in keeping with the pixel art - the textboxes and heart symbols looked like engine defaults. I would have also appreciated more voice work for dialogue. The overall quality of the game massively outweighs that though. I got this from the Humble Overwhelmingly Positive Bundle and it definitely deserved to be there. Looking forward to playing the rest of the series.

You'll probably only get a kick out of this classic if you like point-and-click adventures (if you haven't played any, this is one of the best in the genre so give it a shot!) This is a remastered edition with great new graphics, nicer sound and some decent voice acting (but you can easily swap between these and the old graphics and sound whenever you like). It has some of the smartest writing I've seen in any game - it's genuinely funny and has a grand total of one sex joke and zero poo jokes, which would be revolutionary if the game hadn't been made 28 years ago.

It does suffer from a very awkward verb-based interaction mechanic, a lack of clear direction in some places (though the hint system makes up for that), unskippable slow travel and long pauses between sentences which muck up the delivery of some of the gags. However the rest of the game totally outweighs those problems. For me the highlight was the unique swordfighting mechanic, and I'm sad there wasn't more.

Tim Schafer got an award on the day I wrote this and just from playing this game I can see why. I hope the sequel lives up to it but it's a tough act to follow...
