A short but sweet love letter to the niche-but-lovable crime-solving puzzle visual novel genre. The writing is solid, the pixel animations for the characters are cute, and my only suggestion is that I'd love more content. I look forwards to seeing what the studio can do in the future! Thanks, Paper Cat!

GUESS WHAT SONY REVERSED THEIR DECISION WE'RE SO BACK IT'S NICE TO HAVE ALL MY REVIEWS ON THE ACCOUNT BE POSITIVE AGAIN GOOD JOB HELLDIVERS anyways time to turn this in to a real review

I remember back with some old friends playing Magicka and Magicka 2. Both were really fun ways to mess around with said friends, and they generated a good bit of joy, even if we didn't get to do it that often. Eventually, Helldivers came along, filling a similar niche but with a more generative approach. Sadly, my friends at the time didn't really latch on to it the same way that we did to Magicka, so even though I enjoyed it, I didn't really play it as much as I would've wanted.

Fast forwards to a few months ago, I saw Helldivers 2 get announced! I had new friends at the time, and seeing it was 3rd person instead of top-down, I happily encouraged them to try it out with me. And boy, were we all pleasantly surprised. The aesthetic was clean, the parody was on point, and the gameplay was fun and enjoyable! All my friends enjoyed some aspect of it; some enjoyed the over the top destruction, others the strategic callouts they could make. And yet again, some just liked seeing funny ragdolls of their friends fly across the screen. A great time was had by all, and even if I still don't get to play as much as I would like (I am sadly an adult now, and have responsibilities like 'rent' and 'work') I had another hangout with my close friends.

On top of that, the monetization? Very fair. You can earn premium credits via normal gameplay, and at a decent clip, too; I've barely optimized my gains on this front, and I still have enough to buy the premium stuff I want. My friends who bought the special edition did so more out of respect for the developers and to support the game than for the benefits therein.

Speaking of the developers, they've been very hands-on with the community - in a good way! They let us know what's going on, they try and keep open communication, they don't compromise on their creative vision but still make changes if it's on issues that actively detract from the experience. And most importantly, they play the game actively and have fun alongside us.

Lastly, I should touch on the gameplay itself. It's a 3rd-person horde extraction shooter; you drop in to a zone with 1-4 players, choosing customized loadouts of both weapons and special deployables called Stratagems. You call in Stratagems by inputting special directional inputs on your keyboard - some are quick and easy, like having an orbiting spaceship shoot a single round to a point you designate, or deploying a minefield from orbit. Others, however, like calling down special equipment (like extra big guns, drone backpacks that shoot lasers at enemies, or even a mech suit) have longer inputs that can't really be pulled off by most people in the heat of combat. Using your unique set of stratagems, you work with your team to complete an objective in a set time limit, and once the objective is done, you can make it to extraction for a heroic last stand against whatever force you're fighting today.

All in all, it's a simple gameplay loop that lends itself to fun emergent gameplay and dynamic, personal stories. Comedy, heroics, and memorable moments abound in the game, and you get to be part of a tight-knit community all the while!

Only points of detraction is that the game is sometimes too popular. When the servers are at peak capacity (a surprisingly frequent occurrence), the game can sometimes be a bit unstable, and it can be hard getting in to games. Additionally, the game is by its very nature always online; however, this is for mechanical reasons, as the core gameplay loop is partying up with other players and dropping in and out of their games with ease. There's still the occasional bug (although the studio is quick to fix the most egregious ones), and as one of the enemy factions is...well, literally bugs, I can't recommend the game to anyone with a severe phobia to insects (even if they're rather comical in appearance; I'd recommend taking a look at some pictures of them before you decide whether or not it's too much for you).

tl;dr 9/10, potential Game of the Year contender, let's spread managed democracy together in game.

One of the best spectacle fighters I've ever played. It's fun, it's easy to control but with lots of depth there if you want to go hard, it has an *amazing* soundtrack (both in the licensed music and the "streamer mode" music - I highly recommend you do two playthroughs, one with each) and most importantly? It's just a well-written, just-for-fun romp that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Honestly, it's the best MMO I've ever played. It doesn't feel like I'm wasting my time when I play it; I get to pick it up and put it down whenever works best for me, and I'm not going to get kicked around by the devs for doing as such. It has fantastic controller support, a story that rewards you for getting invested in it, and a great community. Just a positive life experience all around, in all honesty. I highly recommend it.

On one hand, this is a genuinely fun game with plenty of depth of strategy and a lot of great stealth and loud gameplay, definitely fulfills the 'grand heist' fantasy of Oceans' 11 or Heat.

On the other, there are a lot of micro-DLCs, and while you can definitely get by only buying the DLC you really want and just joining public lobbies/friend lobbies for stuff you don't have, it can be tedious at times and not fun if no one is running the heists you want.

It's like a space train management game with a overwhelming helping of cosmic horror. Highly recommended.

Best insurance simulator on Steam, 11/10.

But also, more importantly, a masterclass example on puzzle games in general. It tells a story in a very natural and clever way, and although it can get a little bit 'guessing game' on a couple of characters and on the last few characters as you narrow down the results, it's still enthralling up until the end.

HOLD IT!

When you say that you're 'looking in to mystery games...' did you intend for more of a visual novel or an adventure-type game? If you were looking for something that focuses on the stories and puzzles more overall and is plenty difficult without being too overwhelming, I highly recommend this game!

One could even say I OBJECT to not buying it as soon as possible!
