Extremely tight controls join forces with ingenious level design to produce several hundreds dollars' worth of broken computer peripherals and an irrational fear of two-rung ladders. Strongly recommended.

How am I so blessed to have so many good JRPGs this year? I didn't think anything would touch Crystal Project for many years, but along comes Chained Echoes. This game is a legitimate masterpiece, and it holds its own among the greats such as FF6 and Chrono Trigger. The story is gritty, dark, and mature. The battle mechanics are deep, rich, and engaging. The characters are fun, quirky, and distinct. The art and music are both incredible - many tracks are obviously and intentionally homages to FF6 songs, which I absolutely loved. Tons of references to classic RPGs throughout the game, but they don't feel hamfisted or out of place. Seriously, I can't give enough praise to this game. It was an absolutely amazing experience throughout.

Exploration is a big place where the game shines. Even at the beginning, before you get the JRPG-mandated world travel mechanics, it's such a treat to travel to every nook and cranny of the environment. The map is fantastic, and the level layouts really lend themselves to mystery. You see a section of the map that you simply have no idea how to reach, and it really ramps up the excitement when you finally figure it out, get the item to unlock it, travel there during the course of the story, etc. The dev did an incredible job at building anticipation and delivering on the excitement.

The stat, skill, and equipment systems are also incredibly fun to mess around with. Action skills, passive skills, class skills, and equipment modifiers can be combined in clever ways to make some very interesting builds - and these combinations can synergize across characters too! There are so many viable builds and team comps, all with their own pros and cons. I can absolutely see myself playing this game again using entirely different characters, just to see how different of an experience it would be.

The story... oh man. Classic SNES-era RPG story. FF6 is my favorite JRPG of all time, and so many plot beats made me think back to FF6 - not because the actual plot is anything resembling FF6, but just the *feel* of the story. I absolutely loved it, and I think it's one of the primary elements that truly sets the game apart from others.

All that said, I would be lying if I said the game was absolutely perfect. I have a few minor complaints: some of the dialog mismatches the mood of the scene, which sticks out like a sore thumb when it occurs because the rest of the writing is tight.

Additionally, the difficulty curve is odd at times. For the most part, the first part of the game is very challenging and kept me on the edge of my seat, whereas the end became a breeze - although this may be my fault, since I did literally all of the exploration and side content as soon as it was available. I was drawing my playtime out, especially the end-game content (of which there myriad), because didn't want the experience to end. That brings me to my other quibble: a lot of the really cool equipment is only available very late-game, at which point you hardly need it and barely get a chance to use it.

See how minor those quibbles are? Those are the only faults I can find in this absolute gem of a game. How on Earth one person designed this game, I have no idea, but hats off to him. Like FF6 and Chrono Trigger, this will be a game I return to every few years for the rest of my life.

I rate this the same as Crystal Project: 9.5/10, which is the highest I have ever rated a game. An absolute treasure. I've you're a fan of that SNES style of RPG, do NOT skip out on this one.

Really fun game. Fairly short - 3-4 hours for me - and bordering on easy-moderate difficulty, but everything is logical which is somewhat rare for this kind of game. Charming graphics and snicker-worthy humor throughout. Absolutely worth the $2 I spent for it while it was on sale, and despite the length, I'd be very likely to pick it up for the base $10. A very well-crafted, tight experience.

This game is an absolute masterpiece. It implements everything I love about JRPGs and gets rid of the stuff I don't.

FIRST OFF: Exploration! The movement is incredibly fun, and every progression along movement tech opens up a surprising amount of new areas to explore, or new ways to explore the areas you've already been to. The way the map opens up is genius, and the way you find new ways to explore previous areas makes backtracking a rewarding adventure rather than a tedious slog. It's very Metroidvania-like in that regard. The treasure you find is generally really good and appropriate for the progression point you're at. I found myself excited to get most of the treasures I found, and had ways to immediately put them to use.

SECONDLY: Movement! I know it's subjective, and I understand people who say they don't like the platforming; but for me, the movement is absolutely glorious. The platforming puzzles are both interesting and engaging, and I did not find the isometric perspective to be the hindrance that other people seem to. (Pro-tip: you can rotate the camera ~15 degrees in either direction to get a better idea of where things lie in relation to your position.)

THIRD-MOST: Classes/combat! The job system of the classes is fantastic. Warning: If you don't like job systems, you will not like this game. The vast majority of the combat from mid- to late-game will require you to do heavy experimentation with your classes, passives, and equipment. You will constantly be trying new combinations to see what works for a particular area or boss.

Within every fight, very little is hidden from you - the creator provides you with a wealth of information such as turn order, stats, enemy abilities + descriptions, status effects + descriptions, exact damage numbers, etc. The combat reminds me very, very much of Slay the Spire, which is an incredibly good thing and a very interesting and welcome addition to a JRPG. I really hope more games follow suit on this.

I see a lot of people are saying that the game lacks balance, but I did not experience this. There were undoubtedly some frustrating encounters for me, but they *always* boiled down to me being stubborn and/or not thinking outside of the box with my party composition. It also took me awhile to realize I needed to treat regular mobs like the threats they are - if you mash A through a fight from mid-game onward. you're going to have a bad time.

I also see a lot of people saying that many encounters require one hyper-specialized build to win. I imagine it is frustrating for the creator to read some of these comments, because it's obvious an absurd amount of care was put into making the fights legitimately challenging without pigeonholing you into "the one way to win". It is true that many encounters require you to change up your current setup - the same party composition will certainly *not* be viable in every section of the game - but every encounter has several ways to approach it if you think creatively about your class abilities, passives, and equipment combinations in relation to the enemies you're facing. Don't believe me? Watch some streams or Let's Plays and see the incredible variety of strategies people use to win the same encounters. I deem this claim objectively false.

FOURTHEST: Difficulty! I played on Hard mode, and it lived up to the name, especially late-game. There is a point where your level doesn't mean much, and it's all about the classes and equipment you choose. There are so many awesome combinations of abilities, and the equipment can really take builds to a whole new level. I've come up with some *very* interesting parties, some of which are incredibly broken (but still fun as heck). I will repeat again: this game requires heavy experimentation - you cannot expect to beat this game, especially on Hard mode, with the same party the entire time. Different areas/bosses require different strategies, which is one of the biggest strengths of the game.

FIFTH OFFMOSTESTLY: Complaints! My biggest gripe about this game is the LP grind. LP is what you use to unlock abilities for the classes you have, and it's a bit disappointing that you have to grind out LP to make classes usable, especially considering how grind-free the rest of the game is. It's a bit tedious, and while I know there are ways to speed this up a little bit, I still ended up spending a good 8-10 hours total grinding. Considering I have well over 100 hours into the game, this isn't a huge deal, but I think I would have started experimenting with classes a lot sooner had I had more access to said classes right off the bat.

My other chief complaint is the relative lack of story. I actually really liked the way the story was loosely and sparsely scattered throughout, really encouraging exploration over goal seeking, but in the end the story just felt a little too thin. I get that this was by design and I appreciate what the creator was going for, but I think they went a bit too far with it.

SUMMARY: An incredible game with very few flaws, and the ones it has are minor in comparison. There is so much more good than bad here. The movement and exploration is world class tier - I don't know if there is any RPG that even comes close in my eyes. The combat, enemy design, equipment, and classes are all fascinating and guarantee many hours of engagement. I'm a huge JRPG fan, and this shocks me even as I type it, but this game has catapulted to be one of my top 5 favorite JRPGs of all time.

What an amazing and memorable experience. The fact that is was made chiefly by 1 person absolutely blows my mind, and I hope they continue to create world-class games like this one. I give it one of the highest ratings I've ever given a game: 9.5/10. Incredible depth, very little bloat, tons of strategy. If you love JRPG mechanics but hate the too-frequent "grind levels then mash A to win" style of many of them, this is an absolute must-play.

What a fantastic game. The game controls like a dream, the level design is spectacular, and the game does its best to limit backtracking by periodically opening shortcuts to create a straight path from beginning to end. The way the levels are laid out is really quite ingenious. It presents a good challenge without ending up frustrating.

While the game plays phenomenally, what really connected with me was with the story, dialogue, character design, and the like. The more I played, the more I fell in love with the world they built. It's extremely charming and witty, at times silly and at times touching. It's clear a lot of time, effort, and love went into this game, and I can't say enough good things about it. What a treat the developers gave us. Absolutely recommend this - I think almost anybody can play and appreciate this game.

Quite simply, the best deckbuilder I've ever played. I only have one other game in my library that I've played more than Slay the Spire, and it's a multiplayer survival game which is made to eat time.

The balance in StS isn't perfect, of course, but it's the closest I've seen. The developers really have a talent for incorporating interesting card mechanics that don't devolve into a slew of broken effects. Decks tend to snowball if you build them intelligently (and probably get a little lucky), but I find this to be extremely rewarding - more often than not, the game is extremely brutal at higher difficulty levels, so it feels great when a well-played deck demolishes everything in sight. This works in the other direction as well: a few bad card choices will get you dead with a quickness.

Really cool mechanics, really great art, really fun game. 10/10 for me. Even though I have the bulk of my time in this game behind me, I can guarantee that I'll still be playing a game or two of Spire every now and then for years to come.

If you liked Getting Over It, you'll almost certainly like this. I honestly find Pogostuck more difficult, as you get moments in Getting Over It to compose yourself between the insanity. Pogostuck though? Pogostuck, you never stop the hop. The fact that I never get a moment to breathe is just... infuriatingly thrilling, and playing alongside others adds a lot more than I thought it would. Love the character customization options too! This game is bruuuuutal - and I love it. Keep up the great work, Superku.
