This is tough for me to give a negative review. I really wish I could give a middle ground review.

My main complaints is lack of single player / real private server (self hosting) for friends. Lack of Mod support.

Other than that I love the game to some degree. The MMO aspect ruins the fun co-op section where as we can go offline, turn the server off and turn it back on once a week. Taxes? whatever. however the storage system doesn't really allow you to go away for a long time period. and it really shouldn't be a hard move to storage. You need to get to a certain point before you can get anything worth to store. So you really have to pick and chose what you are saving.

Combat is fun, fluid, straightforward.

Story is alright. I loved the books and this isn't a huge afront to it.

Worm is way too sensitive sometimes. Then other times its non-existant.

The main combat loop is actually fun.

I really dont know what to say other then I feel this was one of the worse tales of games I played?
Writing was 5/10. Lots of plot holes, inconsistencies plenty to do with the Main story. The last part of the game I was hate finishing it.
Game kept crashing every once in awhile. I used a the fix patch but that seemed to only fix some of the crashes. Often times crashing right after a boss fight. and only got worse as the game went on.
I didn't understand the hate people had for Rose, though I do feel like it was somewhat... Idk weird? I was getting spear drops. No one uses spears. All their costumes were shared. It was just weird.
Overall if you can deal with some crashes, and you are up for an alright and meh unique story then this game is for you. I would say play Berseria. I played it before Zestiria and it was kinda cool. Though i have seen people say play Zestiria first

TLDR: If you enjoyed animal crossing, but hated the time gating of collectables, waiting for certain days, etc. Then you will love this game. There is a daily "time" gate of sorts but you can play a good 8 hours before hitting the time gate of waiting for the next RL day. No waiting months for a change in seasons. Highly recommended at base price but fully recommended on a sale :)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was worried when I first read the negative reviews. I was worried about time gates, the jank from coming from a phone game, microtransactions, and various other things related to phone gaming.
I got it for my girlfriend despite my reservations and to my surprise alot of those comments were... exaggerated at minimum and completely false at max. Time gating for example. is a daily, never a week nor a month. Reset is always at 2am EST. The things time gated are mostly Daily gifts (3 per friend) and resources on the island. There are items they give fairly regularly through Weekly quests and daily quests to reset daily gifts and resources on the island. This is however not really needed the first 5-10 hours in the game.
Some optional quests are wait till the next day but they are optional and never a gate to the rest of the game.
Funny puns, decent game play, fun puzzles, easy fishing, decent mechanics like stamina, gifting, progress feels good.
Again those that complain about not being able to time skip are over exaggerated some misleading or others just false. Those complaining "its a solo game they ban you." don't actually know what they are talking about. I have used cheats in single player games, speedups, exp modifiers and etc for years. This game is a phone game ported to Switch and Steam. Time manipulation is not hard but doing so corrupts the save file. So any checks for daily quests/weeklies/holiday events would be server side and would flag that. That is what "bans" you from doing multiplayer. You can start a new game and connect online again after that. Time manipulation isn't even needed as the games gates are resetable with items. Just "hack" that item into the game then. or do what was meant with the game play the game for a reasonable time frame then wait till you can do that again.

TL;DR: This is one of my favorite games out there, however I know its flaws. You should watch someone stream it or ask someone you know to play split screen with before buying for yourself.

Main review:
This game is a diamond in the ROUGH. Rough being key word. Basically if you like Dark souls, you MIGHT like this game. If you like Morrowind, you MIGHT like this game. If you like rogue-likes you probably wont like this one. You start with nothing, you are a nobody, and honestly nothing you do REALLY matters at all. There is no real Leveling. There are so many ways to mess up your build. Your gear is a big part of your playstyle. You need to be skilled or just cheez the crap out of it. There are no real quest markers. No real journal to follow. The world is yours to discover. So then whats the point of doing stuff? Well thats up to you. There is an end game. You can finish it. This game takes SKILL or cheese.

Pro:
-Open world exploration isn't always rewarded, but the world itself is gorgeous and well crafted. Places you dont feel important can be important later on. but you can visit them, clear it, do whatever. Fail a puzzle because a key from later on. Etc.
-Makes you feel like you are just a normal guy. You can die no matter what. You can have the best gear but you being bad at the game can cause you to die to even the lowest creatures.
-World building. They just did it right. I could have some complaints but overall great.

Mixed:
-Combat. UHG okay its almost a con, but it can be clunky but if you learn it taking your backpack off, dodging etc. If you like the clunky feel from Monster Hunter you might like this games combat.

Con:
Not for everyone. Period. If you are unsure it goes on sale often enough. I personally think its worth the full price but if you are unsure about it buy it on sale for 20$ or less. If you are into souls likes then you should try it out the very least.

The TL:DR this game is a better version of its predecessor My time at Portia,

They have taken good things from the previous game and made them better. They have introduced some better things. Does the game run better then MTAP? Solid no from me, b ut overall if you are not modding the crap out of the game for your second play through you would barely notice it.

Pros:
Characters: At first I thought they didnt have better characters then MTAP, but most of them grew as the time went on and you got to know them into better characters (albeit cheesier).

Story: They def took a page out of their own book, but made the story better alittle less everywhere and more organized. Again they just made it better.

Pacing: MUCH better pacing then the previous game, You can beat the game anywhere between 50hours and 100ish hours. however Thats with doing everything under the sun and back.

Middle:
combat: Its the same old, Alittle better but not by much. Might of been the use of guns that made it better.

Graphics: Saw the difference and the improvements from the art, but somehow felt like a downgrade from the previous game.

Romance: Sometimes certain characters just felt like it was rushed, while others it felt like you were being pushed to like them. This being said by the end of the game on playthrough 1 I regretted my choice. There were many people who grew and became way better characters.

Cons:
Time: Sometimes it can be a bit of a hurry up and wait. it is a leisure game, but wish there was a time speed up option like sitting down.

Events: Sometimes events overlap. AND THAT SHOULD BE OKAY. but it feels bad sometimes. Wedding, and some other big exciting thing happening on the same day? well okay then! lol

Overall I love this game, its on my favorites. Farming sims never get on my favs but it is such a gem that I have to put it up there and they can count on me again to support their kickstarter a third time when it comes around.

TLDR: The game is "alright" in the most basic sense. Wait till mods to do Bethesda's job once again.

Okay I really wish I could put a middle option here. The further into the game I got the more it went from a
yes to a maybe. At the start I could of said if you enjoyed Skyrim/Fallout you would enjoy this. This slowly gets to be less... true as the game goes on. I wont drone on about it being lifeless. That is just space in general. however nothing moves forward unless you are there. There is no sense of moving parts in the rest of the world. there is a certain point where you come across big buildings (avoiding spoilers) that haven't been explored or opened or exploited. RIGHT next a mining company. Some how no rumors of these big buildings, nothing.
Like it worked in Fallout and The elder scrolls. In elder scrolls people have lots of things to be scared of and so they stick to roads or towns. Fallout makes sense because they are barely surviving and anything can go wrong at any moment. However there are mega companies, mining companies and full blown governments and some how these things haven't been explored or marked?
Scale is another huge problem with this game. So the cities have no real back splash to make them look bigger then what we can explore. New Atlantis for example looks like you can maybe host a few thousand. it is lazy design. They could of easily added a grate or window that shows (for example new Atlantis) a thriving city underneath. A backdrop. A window of something bigger. but naw they chose to just scale everything down.
Are all these things fairly minor complaints? yes. However they just slowly start to boil over. is the gameplay good? It doesn't break any rules but doesn't improve on anything. Is the dialogue good? Side quests can be interesting sometimes but often times you start ignoring them. The faction quests are meh. Something that should of felt like you were entering into a giant space battle for the future of a faction, felt like an extremely watered down version of a small skirmish. Something you were building up to, I would understand if you didn't have load screens everywhere but you do and yet here we are fighting 4 or 5 ships. this should of been this epic fight. Lots of death, losses but I finished the fight in less then 30 seconds of warping in. My 4 turrets just killed them all. Like this was a fearsome fleet that was causing fear accross the settled worlds.

Edit 1: 11 more hours. but also an addition to my complaint. You would think Main story quest line landing spots would be hand crafted. Not just the building or what not, but the entire map it spawns in. However it doesn't feel that way at all. Also getting tired of teleporting under my ship or being forced underground because of my ship (this is with no mods.)

Rant over... The game is "alright" in the most basic sense. Wait till mods to do Bethesda's job once again.

I cannot recommend this game, honestly. How to explain this in a productive manner...

So first lets take into consideration that games that came out in 2013 were things like GTA V, Bioshock Infinite, The last of us, XCOM: Enemy within. This is not harping on its graphics at all. This is harping on its story telling and lack of animation in many scenes. They could of done Anime style cut scenes (Like Tales of Zestiria which did come out 2 years later but the point still stands.) Instead much of it falls flat on the story telling of scenes because of the stillness of the characters. Their poses are those straight out of an exaggeration tv show. I know this game came out for PS vita, and PS3 originally. I just find it... is flawed?

The characters are human they have flaws ,they fight, they are awkward, etc. That is fine, and yes I have a hard time connecting to any of the characters. However some of the story telling is through their profile, some of it is hidden quests, and while I dont mind missing a few things here and there this is just part of the whole "poor story telling" thing I feel is wrong with this game.

Sometimes the pacing of the game feels off, particularly with the growth of the characters. For example chapter 1 is April 17, 18, 21, 24, 25. THAT is technically fine, if not for the fact that the characters grow or have conflicts with the knowledge of your character, but not the knowledge of the player.

other than that, the game is Fine. the most basic fine. nothing that breaks the meta, nothing that really does anything great. Combat is fine, overarching story is fine, character interactions are fine, Fishing is fine. The game is pretty short, well I say that, but howlongtobeat says 60hrs. However speed run says 2h 44m so clearly I am rushing. (about an hour in a friend suggested I record how long it is taking me. I am currently at 16 hours and chapter 5. out of 7.) Most of my hours in the game are me getting too bored to continue but not wanting to stop just yet. If you want to beat it 100% on the first go its impossible without cheats, you get limited bond points (this is not a complaint just observation) so it will be annoying to go through everything to get 100% achievements.

When I got this game I had heard ALOT of good things about it, and thought i would enjoy it. However honestly other than my damn stubbornness to actually finish this game, I would not recommend it.

Look I could say this game is one of my favorite games of all time, that wouldn't be a lie. If you enjoy rough around the edges gemstone, then this is your game. If you enjoy sim games, then this game may be fore you. If you like games that like to make you question if you are a masochist, then this game could very well be for you.
Its not that it is absolutely hard of a game. Its that you will have to learn how to survive in an environment that is harsh, unforgiving and sometimes not fair. There is only the story that you create. Do you wanna play it safe for hours? Mining outside of town right in side of the town guards? Want to fight bandits? Create your own nation? then do it. There are things to do, and "ways" to explore to do it. However in all my time in game, I still haven't done most of the things others will talk about. I have made bases, fought all of the Holy nation guards and successfully made a fort they will never want to invade.

I will put a * to my No.

Gameplay itself is great. Fantastic even. Most weapons you can use feels smooth and well made.
The Unit controls can be alittle wonky (Telling your units to go into a shield wall but after getting into it they try to engage with one or two of them refusing to be in the shield wall. You tell your units to shield rush, they sit there because it clipped against a wall when giving order. Etc.)
Overall I would recommend this game during the first 2 weeks of a season.
The first few weeks of a new season actually feel exciting and everyone is on a level playing field. You can play around with actual strategy. Then third week unlocks. People who have been playing this game for many seasons will have troops like Berserkers, (you can still earn them but if you didn't know to earn them before week 3 you are at an extreme disadvantage. also not the only unit from seasons but main villian.) It no longer becomes a rock paper scissors on what unit you bring out for what situation, it becomes a who has a max level, good doctrines (kind of like runes to make your units better), and what variant of the unit you have. Quite frequently you will see a team pull out all zerkers and if your team defense or offense doesn't have any you will get steam rolled.

Is there pay to win: I wouldn't say yes*, at least it hasn't felt that way. There are ways to get stronger faster, and often times I feel like that is pay to win, yet somehow I feel they really balanced it in a way where, it doesn't feel overbearing as of yet to me in the first 4 weeks to be pay to win.

tl;dr: Play during the first two weeks of a season, extremely fun. No one is at a huge advantage other then experience. After that either join the meta or be destined to lose alot.
