A very cute and serene game with an absolutely wonderful art style. Gameplay is satisfying. Voice acting is delightful. Story is realistic, but not intense and discomforting. It's a little pricey for it's length, but I think it's worth it. I recommend for people who like puzzles and nature :)

Was waiting for this to release for a while and was pleasantly surprised to see it was already released on Epic and farther along in development than expected. First off, the gunplay is great, like Destiny 2's gunplay but weightier, heavier, stronger, and meaner. The vibe is immaculate. The progression is satisfying. Pretty much the only things that I'd want is:
1. More stuff, which is planned.
2. Levels more like the castle that center on a location rather than just the wilderness.
3. More dynamic events like the Warden or the Drowned Captain.
4. There's plenty of weapons in the game and their progression is great, minor tuning to bring up some weaker options and further differentiate some of the semi-automatic rifles would be nice though.
5. Bosses look great but could do with more on the gameplay side of things. Would highly recommend looking at other non-standard fps games like RoboQuest for inspiration on how fast a boss fight should be, and how they should differentiate from regular enemies.
6. Extraction feels like a gimme - I never feel threatened to escape.
7. Looting feels separate from the world itself. I would recommend looking at another game, Chernobylite, to see how a single player story extraction game handles looting for inspiration on tying loot to the map itself instead of some chests.
8. Spooky ♥♥♥♥ and night time! The game is creepy during the day and some creepy night vibes would go hard!!
9. The souls/extraction intersection is really interesting, but I think some more thought needs to be done on where the difficulty should come from, particulary with respect to the enemies. Should some enemies (i.e. woodsman) just be a resource expense? What should a player do if they run out of ammo? How do you make an individual enemy a stronger threat without making them high damage and high health (Devotees can be frustrating here)? What enemies should be fodder, and what enemies should be individual threats? How can you identify individual threats over mobs of weaker foes? These are hard questions to answer, since this game is basically its own combination of genres! But I think fitting the design to answer these questions intently would do well to capitalize on this games potential. Recommending a couple more games, RoboQuest and ULTRAKILL have very intentionally enemy design that require the player to move to survive and punish the player for panicking -- I think this sort of high intensity control fits the FPS gameplay to a souls experience most, but I'd be eager to see what the developers make of this.

A classic and a treat to play. Really interesting playing this after Elden Ring. Just go in with the mindset that this is an older game, have a little patience, and you'll really be able to appreciate the game and see how it birthed a whole genre.

SWEET LIBERTY, THE BLOOD!

May 4:
Game is very fun, but I have to change my review to negative for the foreseeable future. The game is now demanding that all users make a PSN account to continue to play the game they paid for. While apparently for the purpose of moderation and player safety, this is clearly bogus as moderation and player safety exists outside of PSN accounts on other crossplay games.

Besides all to frequent data breaches under Sony and other large companies, many who purchased this game do not have access to PSN in their region. The official course of action from Arrowhead as per their discord was to register the account in a region that is supported; but as I understand it, VPNs and other forms of region bypassing are against Sony's ToS, which would essentially give AH and Sony rights to deny service to everyone who follows instructions from an unsupported region.

This sucks because I have little to no complaints about the game besides I'm just kind of done with it for now, but this is a pretty bad situation.

May 6:
The communities protest seems to have been hugely effective, and I honestly find it heart warming that so many people were willing to protest for others even if they were not affected. My review is positive again, but I will be watching AH and Sony closely.

I'm surprised to see the steam reviews are only mostly positive. I'm going to try to review the game not as a reaction to disagreement, but on its own.

I played the game on hard, switching to standard midway through; and played on the "old school" puzzle style.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. It takes inspiration from Resident Evil in exploration and a bit of The Last of Us in combat. The puzzles are solid and very solveable, I only had one that I got caught up on and I did not need to look anything up. The sound design and the lighting were absolutely immaculate. Seriously, the sound design is a huge highlight. Actors did a great job. 99% of all animations were fluid and great. Story was very interesting, lovecraftian spoiler stuff also super cool. The fluidity of environments changing with bouts of madness was FANTASTIC. From what I can tell, there are multiple endings and different things for which main character you play, so I'll definitely be doing at least one or two more play-throughs.

Below I have some criticisms, but anything not mentioned was pretty great!

Bugs: I only encountered minor 2 bugs in the entire game: Water making flashlight light wonky, and getting stuck on some geometry (quickly resolved by messing around or reloading from a rapidly set autosave). Performance was steady and high throughout on maximum settings, but I have a very good PC.

PC Portage: Some of the default buttons are weird, and it was a little confusing to figure out what button to heal and switch weapons was at first, since its shown with a D-pad

Combat: It isn't the focus, but plays an important role to prevent the player from feeling comfortable. It completes that role well, but the combat is a bit lackluster- the melee combat in particular. I also wish that you could hold a throwable without having to hold Q and move at a snails pace. That said, I found the final boss very satisfying, intense, and generally really cool.

they botched the launch of this, hard. but they stuck with it and made it a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good game. dlc is also fantastic. i'd rather games come out complete, but sticking with a game to this degree is the second best thing a studio can do

this game started off being really scary and I spent like an hour and a half doing the first mission on the easiest difficulty solo, nearly peeing myself. now i try to speedrun the game with a friend or two and its still wildly fun
