FAVORITE VISUAL NOVELS LIST (or the saintly wall of irrefutable truth)
#0 - Cross†Channel
Another masterpiece by Romeo Tanaka aka the Kamige machine eternally cursed by bad translations. An exceptionally deep story about the eternal and difficult cycle of trying to find connections with other people through any means (communicating, creating, sharing...) to escape the overbearing loneliness that is inherent in our human nature with one of the strongest and memorable conclusion i've ever seen.

--Alone. Emptiness. No one to connect with. Yet i must share with the world, i am very lonely but accepting true loneliness would mean rejecting my human nature. I turn on my broadcasting station hoping that my voice will reach someone, even if it doesn't, just wishing that my words will be heard is enough to ease my mind. I speak.

Is anyone alive out there?
If you are, please listen.
[...]

We will keep endlessly rebuilding our antennas and broadcasting aimlessly because this is who we are, believing that someday we will be understood by someone else. Yet this is the most beautiful (and painful) part about being human.

To you the one reading this, with which i crossed channel at this fixed moment in time,
never give up on connecting with the world in your own way.
Keep creating about what defines yourself, keep crossing channels with other people,
everyone has the power to touch someone else heart.
Show to the world that you are alive. Prove to yourself that you are alive.

I will most likely never know if you've ever stumbled upon there,
maybe you like the same things i do, maybe you think the same way i do, maybe you were curious, maybe it was by accident.
But in the near-solipsistic condition of human existence, maybe we managed to understand each other this instant.
Until we cross channels again.

#0 - Umineko when they cry
Warning: Consuming this work is deemed dangerous, it will permanently ruin your perception of japanese media as almost nothing else can compare to it.

I came in with extremely high expectations after all the good i heard from it and it still blew them out. All episodes are excellent with intense endings and just keep getting better and better until the grand finale. Incomparable to anything animanga related as it surpass them all without any exceptions, and can only be compared to actual litterature. A masterpiece among masterpiece, that challenge and respect the reader intellect who actually try to solve the mystery, which is surprisingly deep and multilayered.

Will you, the reaper, seeker of the truth, chose to lower the curtain on the witch's tales? or firmly believe in illusions and fairy tales until the end?

#0 - Wonderful everyday down the rabbit hole
Written by a guy who is very interested and cultivated in classic litterature/philosophy and at the same time cannot stop retweeting futa porn on his twitter account, just from that you can already tell that this is pure unfiltered life changing kino. Sca-di is truly the writer of all time.
If Yoru no Himawari is not playing at my funerals, i'm resurrecting and going back home

The road that leads endlessly up the hill.
The peak that lies foggy in the distance.
It's just like our own journey through the world.
There's no worrying about what lies at the peak.
We have only to enjoy the journey up the slope.

#0 - Full metal daemon Muramasa
Wildly misunderstood masterpiece, often called the "killing is bad vn", "normalisation of evil vn", "edgelord vn" by people who don't understand it at all. Ever pondered about the very famous "Would the world still turn without morality?(religious, cultural...)"? i think Muramasa answer it perfectly.

Muramasa is a powerful critique of morality and how it can be even more damaging than no morality at all. Its opening catchphrase and a perfect way to summarize it in one sentence: "This is not a story of heroes" doesn't mean "Anti heroes edgefest is coming"; this means in Muramasa morality is worthless, and it will not excuse the "good" actions against the "bad", because escaping from the consequences of your actions through morality/self-righteousness makes you a coward.

A true hero isn't someone who hides himself behind morality; a true hero is someone who accepts the consequences of the entirety of his actions without any excuses, because, after all, in a world without rules where everything is possible and which highly rewards violence, the greatest hero is the one who never unsheathes his sword and pursues the noblest, hardest, and least rewarding goal of all (on an individual level): Peace.

Why am i allowed to live while good men pay for my crimes? Is there no justice in this world? Look at the blood on my hands! Has it not earned me torment? If there is no force in this world that will destroy me for my sins... Then what hope is there? What hope for the good, for those who struggle to be kind and just. Don't let their good mean nothing.

#1 - Higurashi when they cry
Kino alert! Kino alert! Forget about the very bad anime adaptation that literally skip the whole moral of the story and read Peakurashi. This is a novel in 8 parts, the first 4 parts are the question arc, in theses chapters you will go through 4 almost unsolvable mysteries (1 per chapter) with jawdropping plot twists that will make you question everything and everyone. The 4 remaining parts, are the answers arc where the story will answer each mysteries one by one, you won't need to think, you will just need to sit down, watch and accept the truth behind everything. With the truth will come some important life lessons and one of the most beautiful story i've ever read. One thing is certain, the higurashi are not going to be the only one to cry.

I will not quench your thirst.
For you seek the truth and could not accept that.
I will not quench your thirst.
For the truth you desire does not exist.

But I still want to quench your thirst.
For I am the one who cast you into the desert.

#1 Muv-Luv (Extra + Unlimited + Alternative)
Pinnacle of japanese fiction, lots of low/no actions points and worldbuilding but got some of the highest peaks in anything i've ever experienced. The best handling of character deaths i've ever seen, an absurd amount of main characters die and none of their death feel cheap.

Alternative will show you what true terror is, the terror to fight in an unwinnable war where the average survival time on the battlefield is 8 minutes, where your only purpose is to sacrifice your life for a lost cause.
Be ready before playing it, and take a box of tissues because this hit very hard. Basically Attack on Titan if the author wasn't a püssy and went all in with the characters death while still making all of them important, don't expect any characters being superhuman or plot armor it doesn't exist in Muv-Luv, everything happen as it should happen, everybody die when they should die, hope is reserved only for the fools who still haven't faced reality.

#1.5 - LittleBusters!
The true Jun Maeda's magnum opus but felt like it didn't used all of its potential in the end. It got the best and saddest final route in all of Key visual novels, Refrain is absolutely phenomenal. A story about bearing the difficulties of life with friendship and accepting that nothing last forever. The ultimate Key tearjerker. If you played or watched Clannad and thought it was sad you will die playing this one.

I believe that stories are written and read to rebel against the fact that you only live once.

#2 - Clannad
Resonated with me like very few works have before, one of the best coming of age japanese work.

Do you like this school? I really really like it. But, nothing can remain the same forever.
Even fun things and happy things, nothing. Nothing stays that way forever.
Even so, can you still like this place?

The girl who is the world itself and the girl who is the sky

Oh! We have our pockets full,
We poets, of love-letters, writ to Chloes,
Daphnes--creations of our noddle-heads.
Our lady-loves,--phantasms of our brains,
--Dream-fancies blown into soap-bubbles! Come!
Take it, and change feigned love-words into true;

A life changing story written by someone who is both a genius and the most f*cked up person on this planet. A story that can only be truly appreciated if you can understand (or try to understand) the meaning of each chapters and not by stopping at the surface level. A story that will give it's own interpretations to complex philosophical subjects in the most depraved ways possible, but also the most understandable ways. A piece of art too dangerous for consumption if you don't know what you are getting into, and definitely not meant to be experienced by everyone.

5.63 I am my world (the microcosm).

A story that can only be truly understood if you are going through it yourselves, no amount of summary will even make you barely understand why this game is so good.

5.6 The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.

What we cannot think, that we cannot think: we cannot therefore say what we cannot think.

Can I really give my deepest feelings about Subahibi using words, wouldn't it be a diservice to what i really feel, wouldn't it be misunderstood since every words have a slightly different meaning to everyone. Can we truly put our feelings and experiences into words?

Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent

So now why Subahibi start with a Cyrano quote and mention the play multiple time? Because Subahibi really is a rewritten Cyrano de Bergerac (schizophrenia edition) play by an absolutely insane guy, and this is why having read or at least knowing about the play is an important piece to understand Subahibi philosophy of the language and the world.

Humans don’t know what death is. And yet humans know about it.

At first glance this novel have a very nihilistic vision of life reminding us constantly that everyone is cursed to die since the day we are born, everything we achieved is pointless and will not be taken with us in the afterlife. Life is meaningless. But does life really need meaning? Does an intelligent being can truly live without meaning?

Animals don't seek meaning, they don't even question their meaningless life and death.
Animals can't even imagine dying.
However, humans are different,
humans are only allowed to live by meaning.
Unless we give meaning to the scenery we see from here,
we cannot even take the next step.

The novel also contains a good and a bad ending for each chapters, but the only way to go to the next is by obtaining the bad ending. The only way to go further down the rabbit hole is to accept the worst possible outcome because Subahibi is at it's core a story about life. Living is also acknowledging that the world isn't always fairn, being a saint and the purest human being doesn't mean that terrible things can't happen to you coincidentally. Life is unfair and yet a miracle.

The world is cruel... and the world is impure. But it's also incredibly beautiful

The novel final and main message is a very simple one. LIVE HAPPILY!.

Words, beauty, prayers… We use these three things to obtain these wonderful days. Humans, be happy!

"Live happily!" a quote from Ludwig Wittgenstein, a man who had a horrible life, from being traumatised after fighting in the first world war, to the suicide of his 3 brothers, to his exil in Norway. Yet his last words to his wife were "Tell them I've had a wonderful life.". The "Live happily!" doesn't mean "Don't be sad, be happy", this is not an order nor an advice, this is simply stating the obvious because this is all we can do, living happily with the short time we have.

The road that leads endlessly up the hill.
The peak that lies foggy in the distance.
It's just like our own journey through the world.
There's no worrying about what lies at the peak.
We have only to enjoy the journey up the slope.

Yet Subahibi has a slightly different meaning than the Wittgensteins' one (albeit still a very rational one), and only use it to tell its true meaning, which is a very Nietzschean view of life (Ubermensch, Eternal Return), the purest form of love of living. Subahibi doesn't ask you to take only the good and forget the bad, it doesn't ask you to go through life with excess to keep being happy. It simply asks you to take everything out of life without omiting anything, and saying YES to life. This is only then that you can live happily.

Let's imagine that during the last day of your life an entity appears before you and says, "You will relive your life the exact same way forever", but you had a miserable life, you were sick, you never knew love, you haven't met most of your goals, you were abused, you were weak... if you see this entity as the Devil, you will hate Subahibi; on the contrary, if you see this entity as a benevolent God you will love it. Because behind all the bad, all the misery you went through, maybe you read a book that opened your eyes, maybe you heard a song that moved you, maybe you had a lot of fun writing a steam review, maybe you had a funny discussion with a pink haired girl on a school roof and this made all the difference.

I don't even know what i'm writting about anymore, english is not even my main language and I have no idea what i've just written, it just sounded cool. I haven't understood anything about the schizophrenic mess that is Subahibi anyway, and i'm sure Sca-Di had no ideas what he was writting either and completely out of his mind on crack. I was just reading it because Mamiya Takuji is literally me and i thought this novel was a biography about myself. Now excuse me I need to commit genocide to help Riruru-chan win against the evils black Riruru's, this is what she told me in the show that aired this morning, anime is what's right, anime is a good thing. She is the only one who understand me. Sorry Zakuro but you aren't pure anymore you wh*re, unlike my Riruru-chan. I love you Riruru-chan.

10/10 Masterpiece But f*ck you ScaDi for writting Jabberwocky 1 aka the Schizo nekopara incest edition chapter. NO I AM NOT AROUSED BY UNDERAGED GIRLS FEET YOU MORON

How far will you go down the rabbit hole?

…And burning with curiosity, [Alice] ran across the field after [the rabbit], and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

No matter how far you go there is no coming back.

PS: Still waiting for the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus anime adaptation

A work of art is the subject seen through eternity.
A life well lived is the world seen through perpetuity.
Therein lies the relationship between art and ethics.
I reject the necessity for an absolute God to perceive eternity.
God is felt through one's fellow man.
And it moves him.
For the ramshackle God dwells in the broken man.
Therein, that ramshackle God holds purpose.
The God who dwells in art is eternal.
Though it is felt for but a moment, it is eternal.
And it is happiness.
Only in such a ramshackle God do I feel such happiness.

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and you—beside—

The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As sponges—Buckets—do—

The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—

Long, long ago,
there was a God who appeared before mankind.

Bread rained down from the heavens.
Some lamented that it was not meat.

Meat rained down from the heavens.
Some lamented that they preferred bread.

God descended down from the heavens.
"Until I know what will make all happy, water shall rain down."

Water rained down from the heavens.
All lamented that their clothes grew wet.

Fire rained down from the heavens.
All lamented that their homes burned down.

God descended down from the heavens.
"Until I know what will make all happy, nothing shall rain down."

Nothing rained down from the heavens.
Some lamented that God had abandoned them.

Many things rained down from the heavens.
Some lamented that God would not make a choice.

Huge rocks rained down from the heavens.
At long last, there were none who lamented.
