Gotta say you should give the manga a try if you can't get into this because of the slow pacing. Yeah, you'll miss out on the soundtrack but you will get a better paced telling of the story with a lot of art instead of just sprites on a background.

Option to toggle sprites would be even better, but that seems not to exist. 07th mod has options for the different sprite styles but seems to only off the PS3 backgrounds as an option.
