I have played every civ game and at this point I'm just tired. I'm tired of the poor release state, lack of features, polish, UI problems, balance and so forth. I'm tired and it's hard to care anymore about what's next.

I bought the founder pack for Valentine's for my wife and me. It was what she wanted for her Valentine's rather than a dinner out while we both took a day off work. To see her disappointment while playing and deciding we'd rather do some shopping at Costco and hit up a local pie place is something that will stick with me. The magic of playing together all day long is gone, and it's replaced with "meh". That "meh" is hard to replace and shake. There just isn't the draw it used to have, and I don't know if that's me or the game. But meh isn't going to get me to spend more money or interest in the game. Even now after release I haven't played it much if at all. It's just meh.

I'll probably re-evaluate this in a few years when the gameis more polished and meets expectations.

I can not as of this point recommend this game. I've played each borderlands game and generally know what I am getting.

In my short time the gameplay seemed good and fun, if different in a way from prior games. Hit boxes seem a bit smaller and more tight on models. The art style has slightly changed from previous games and seems less stylized and more "realistic" than prior entries. This likely is due to the engine change. The story looks less cringe and more appropriate.

The BAD: Crashes and performance. I kept getting what appeared to be shader compilation stutter or something along those lines. No matter what I tried it made the experience just not fun. The game definitely has some really rough edges to it.

At this point I'll wait for some updates to smooth out the game. I already have a big backlog of games and unfortunately the game is competing for my attention in a flooded sea of options and my time is limited. I want to like this game, but in the current state I can't and it's not worth my time investment; as painful as that is to say.

Solid old school type of game. No fluff, no filler, just pure rollercoaster and mainline linear action game.

The set pieces are unmatched and the adherence to the lore is phenomenal. Doesn't demand 100 hours of my time.

Scoped well and does what it set out to do.

While not the best in holding up over time, this game as a good fun romp here in 2024. Definitely hit the correct 40K vibes and you feel like a space marine. Melee is souls light combat, and ranged shooting is straight forward. Fighting orcs is more fun than chaos.

Edit: 2024/05/06 - Sony has backed down from the PSN linking request that was not mandatory when the game was purchased. My review has been changed back to positive.

Edit: 2024/05/04 - Sony decided to do one of the dumbest things ever conceivable and added a restriction to PLAY the game months after launch. With their abysmal record regarding account security it would be foolish of any Steam/PC player to link their account. I can not in good faith recommend this game any further until the issue is resolved. If this restriction had been done at the start of the game launch; the outcry from the community would not have been nearly as bad.

A good game; what is there to say? Game play is fantastic, game loop is great and the overall feel is fine. No micro-transaction ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ either; just a straight good game. If you like Baulder's Gate 3 for being a good game, you'll like this.

Game is solid crpg. Nothing has come close in over a decade. Glad to have purchased this, and absolutely worth the full price tag.

Minus the constant crashes, game is good and runs well. An upgrade to my nastolgia from the 2007 release.

I am finally able to play halo. I've only played the 3rd one on Xbox long time ago.

In the current state, the game is good. A lot of content for price (especially on sale price). Game is smooth and runs well. I won't be doing any multiplayer, but single player is working as expected. I'm slightly impressed at the current quality, as most remasters are generally poor.

Update 2025.10.07:
This review feels like a fever dream of bad, to ok, to bad, to mostly good, and now back to bad. I'm really struggling to understand how the company of CA is run and what decisions the management team is currently making; as nearly all seem to be a direct fumble into the worst decisions for the company in the long run. Once again major bugs and issues have started to occur that are broken for months with no real plan of when they will be addressed. The underlying issue with the lobotomized AI in a strategy game really is frustrating; and that core features of the player experience are tainted.

Since my last review its been nearly 3.5 years of the game's life cycle and the first DLC for Slaneesh still hasn't been released. In that time, only 1 DLC has been released with about 10 since the release of Omens of Destruction; counter to the promises from CA that the DLC would be released on a more timely schedule. One would think that an End Times DLC with Nagash & Neferata would be a slam dunk; but with the rocky DLC delivery, what was once a forgone conclusion is now a question of reality. This really feels like waiting for "The future of Warhammer" 3K style event that is just around the corner.

I really don't understand how they expect the reception of future games to go when they are unable to support the current games. I can confidently say I won't be purchasing any 40K Total War game until well after release. The inability of the company to solidly deliver and consistently deliver is a sore mark that won't be easily forgotten. I'd really need to see the effort from CA put in to address serious bug issues and deliver a consistent quality product to consider purchasing more content. I have over 1,700 hours in WH2; but as of this update only about 650 hrs in WH3, which is further along in its life cycle than warhammer 2. But as I started my review; it feels like a fever where the inconsistency is fact of life and the goal of a minimum viable product.

Update 2024.05.09:
Finally after 2.25 years the game is in a state to properly play. It's no coincidence that after the failure and write off of the doomed Hyenas project that Warhammer 3 is getting some much needed updates. The Shadows of Change (SoC) DLC was improved by nearly doubling the content to add value to what was a terrible DLC. Thrones of Decay (ToD) adds some much needed love to the murgle faction along with general reworks to empire, dwarfs, and nurgle. The ToD DLC is actually good and many improvements to the game make it FEEL like it's in a good state. Hopefully this is a turning point and future DLC will keep a good content and improvement pace. Nobody likely to have a new flame version that feels worse than the previous one. At this point I've uninstalled WH2 and WH3 is now the version I'm playing.

As a consumer, it's frustrating to see our fears were true with hyenas and other side projects along with management ego driving so many of the issues. It took massive financial penalties for the company to start turning the game around and invest in what is their actual products.

Update 2023.08.18:
It has now been 4 months since the previous patch and many items still remain broken. The 3.1 patch left factions and core PAID DLC broken for over 4 months; when some of these items were a quick fix and could have been hot patched within a week.

The unjustified DLC cost and the CA response has left a sour taste in my mouth that they never really intend to fix or modify the base game in a meaningful way. Lack of achievements and general improvements that are still pending implementations (which were in WH2) is something that is a sore spot at 1.5 years into the release cycle of the game. It currently seems they are milking the game for what it is worth and I'm not sure the game is worth my time anymore. I will re-evaluate my review on the 4.0 patch drop. If unsatisfactory, I'll wait till the 5.0 drop. Review is being updated to negative at this time.

Update 2023.04.18:
With the 3.0 game update, the game has reached a vanilla state that seems much better. As of now, I would say yes I would recommend this game. They seemed to have fixed the big issues that plagued the game. Not all, but a good majority of the rocky start problems seem relatively tamped down.

Battles just run better and smoother. They seem just more fluid and not as...blocky as Warhammer 2. By this, I mean formations are not as tight and rigid and the game makes calvary feel a bit better than in Warhammer 2.

The IE map I enjoy more (more readability) and there are a good portion of QOL updates that make the game better. Some core mods are either missing or not fully updated yet, but I can play without those. Ideal, no, but the vanilla experience is better than Warhammer 2.

Also, the balance and lord/faction effects seem more overall better and thematically suited. Prior to update 3.0, I would have said no, play Warhammer 2, which I was doing. After this last update, yes Warhammer 3 is overall better in my opinion.

Previous Review Below:
In the games current launch state, I can not recommend the game to anyone. The current campaign mechanics are unfun, the game is not optimized well, and the units are much less responsive than in Warhammer 2. Many of the WH2 updates from later DLCs just haven't made it into the game, which is a shame.

QOL updates are great, but I can not recommend the game at full price. It's not particularly playable for me, and I'm in a holding mode untill major issues get fixed.

One major issue (or concen) I have is the general slowness of CA to fix or implement a patch. One of the frustrating things with WH2 DLC was how every major DLC would break something, and take 2 to 3 months to fix, which then a new DLC would be launched soon after and restart the issue pain point. Patches need to be done in a week or two.

I will change my review later (perhaps) once the updates are provided, assuming those required updates don't take 6 months.
