Is your favorite part of D&D/Pathfinder/CRGs optimizing builds?

I've got some good and bad news for you.
Remember to answer the door when they knock for a wellness check -- otherwise you might have to abandon your run.

EDIT: Lol, buying the $100+ preorder edition that 'comes with everything' doesn't actually include any Season 2 content. Quality.

Hey! This game is playable finally!

Cheers! It's the best rendition of Space Marines in a vidya game to date!

Purge the heretic hard enough and YOU TOO can become the WARHAMMER 40,000.

After a launch that was, uh, missing several core features, this is easily one of the best Tide-like games available. The gunplay and moment-to-moment action are intense, engaging and visceral; the levels really nail that "every building is an arms factory and/or cathedral run by greeble-obsessed Catholic Space Nazis" aesthetic.

Come for the horde combat, stay because you fell in love with the Ogryn.

All adorable, sexy, and lovable 45 IQ of him.

Step 1: Buy this game CHEAP.
Step 2: Download the Unification Mod (and/or Titanium Wars)
Step 3: Grow a glorious, floor-length neckbeard overnight.

Look, you're either:

-Going to play 2 hours of this game and wonder what the hype is.
-Starting to wonder if you have a problem around 200 hours of playtime.

Literally CANNOT recommend this game enough.
If you're a fan of city/colony builders or build-things-based-economics, this game is the best distillation and refinement of that formula that I've ever played. In fact, if there's a game that does the formula better, I DON'T want to play it because I'm not in a hurry to do that videogame addiction thing a third time.

So! Why is this game so good?
Short answer: It averts the problems endemic in the city builder genre and it looks beautiful as hell.

Long answer: I love games like Tropico, but the core gameplay loop is usually just discovering how the interconnected buildings work. Once you've figured out how to neatly ride the economic curve, you tend to repeat similar strategies from game to game. Later missions might toss in stressful situations or remove a resource, but most of these games have a relatively static 'win state'.

'Against the Storm' completely subverts this by randomizing your resources, tech tree, and goals for almost every single mission. While there are some strategies+combinations that are intrinsically powerful, the win condition for one map might not even function on another. It's a game of constantly reacting to changing goals and information, but the game provides you with enough tools and toys to feel like you're always one-ish step ahead.

As you're constantly adapting to a changing set of goals and priorities on the fly, it's hard to get complacent. This means that every city you build feels organic, springing up around the town's particular resources and residences, instead of feeling like one of those spooky slowly-populating mega-cities from East Bloc countries with centrally planned economies.

[SIDEBAR: Those cities are awesome for urban exploring and/or substance abuse. You get to wander around a big unpopulated Garry's Mod map and the rare people you encounter and generally more pleasantly surprised than anything. I HIGHLY reccomend taking a train to the northern Chinese city of Kangbashi and getting blacked out on local baijiu. It's a blast.]

Anyways, this game also adds some nifty horizontal scale by way of random events. These are WAY more interesting than the usual 'one resource is under-performing and/or something exploded' hazards of Paradox games. Instead, these events offer unique flavorful hazards with a ride range of potential solutions -- all designed to test certain outputs from your city. If you finesse them right, some of these hazards can open up new tech synergies in your colony too, further unique-ifying each game.

Finally, the artistic direction for this game is really solid. I personally love the aesthetic, but your exact mileage may vary -- depending on how much you enjoy seeing variations of 'forests' and 'animal forest folk'. Regardless of your exact sliding-scale furry preferences, it's committed hard to a unique vision and the game is MUCH stronger for it -- looking at more 'standard' RTS buildings would make this game get dull FAST. Instead, I'm constantly finding new visual flairs and ways to decorate my lil' colonies DOZENS of hours into the game.

Also, also (also), the developer has been awesome about releasing frequent updates and listening to player feedback. Every time I've found myself saying "This is cool, buuuuut....", a later patch has somehow addressed one of my grumblings. This game felt like it passed the 'complete' mark several times over during Early Access, and the devs JUST KEPT ADDING STUFF.

So yeah. If you like Tropico, pretty much anything Paradox, or the city-building parts of the Age Of... games, you'll love this. Buy it.

Buy it.

Buy it.

Buy it NOW.
