Crazy to think this game has been out for a year and a half and yet still feels exactly like it did at launch, well minus the even worse performance. I really liked this when it first came out. It was a fun breath of fresh air that I could play with some friends and just chill out with. I was hopeful we'd see lots of new content in the future, new weapons, maps, missions, maybe some new enemies. We mostly got all of that. It's a real shame it sucks. Any new weapons you get are locked behind battle passes which all cost 1000 of the premium in game currency. You can get around 20 - 30 of this per map. They then only refund you 300 of that currency, so have fun either grinding like there's no tomorrow or simply paying money. Not to mention you can't test any of the weapons before hand so if they aren't good, enjoy, you're stuck with them and will now have to spend your time or money to unlock another one. Why not cheat them in, or mod the game? Because this non competitive game has anti cheat and you will be banned for doing so. Can't have players getting around the micro transactions in the game they already paid for.

So your stuck with the same weapons. If the game play loop is varied and fun that's still good right... right? I'm so glad you asked, and to answer no. No it is not. The missions between all 3 of the enemy factions are all exactly the same. the only difference is in aesthetic. Also despite the difference in the enemies designs I never actually found I needed to use different strategies when dealing with them so my load outs never needed to vary. Turns out everything is weak to orbital laser. So you're stuck with the same small collection of weapons doing the same objectives over and over, on maps that only vary in aesthetic all for what? I'm not actually sure on that one. Incremental ship upgrades that take forever to unlock I guess. But once you've got them all that's it. I guess you can just play because you like mindlessly killing things over and over in a mid horde shooter but at that point just L4D2, BO3 zombies, or warhammer vermintide.

Oh and best of all this game is still insanely buggy. From random physics and visual bugs to getting constantly stuck inside geometry, thrown out of the map, or just dying randomly from seemingly nowhere. What killed you? Oh the message that says what killed you also doesn't work. It really is wild to me how accepting people are of bugs in this game because they're everywhere, constant, and stop being fun after the first few deaths. Oh and the bugs aren't just while your playing. Sometimes you just can't play. My partner couldn't join anyone for about a month for some reason. Why? No clue. The fix? Also no idea.

Finally this game runs like hot ass. I thought monster hunter wilds was bad but apparently I wasn't giving it enough credit. During my most recent play session I could not get above 45 fps on a 5090. I really don't know what to say. I get performance running games that use path tracing. In what plane of reality is this ok. The game is also over 140gb.

So what am I really getting. Honestly I'm not too sure. I guess I just feel slighted by a game that had so much promise ultimately turning into the same live service slop it was seemingly trying to displace. At least some of the clips are funny.

Great demo with a lot of potential. The retro aesthetic with cute animal crossingesque character designs create a laid back atmosphere that you can simply get lost in. The small management elements add some extra tasks you'll need to weave into your deliveries to create some variety and thought when planning out deliveries. Being a demo I feel like there is only so much feedback I can give, especially given I don't know what will be in the main game. That being said I think the potential to take on multiple deliveries or queue up deliveries would be cool to see for some extra planning and thought to maximize the number of deliveries you're able to accomplish in the shortest time possible. I also found that the truck could be a bit too snappy given it's weight and the snowy roads you drive on. Some settings that allows for adjustments to the driving model would be really nice to see in the full release.

The use of white phosphors is a war crime. It burns individuals from the inside in a way that is so unimaginably painful no description can truly do it justice. This chemical weapon is used within the game by the player to kill a large group of civilians.

White phosphors has been used by the US in Vietnam and Iraq, Russia in the first and second Chechan war, the UK in the Falklands, and finally by Israel in Lebanon and Gaza.

The US has notably defended its use of white phosphors despite it being a war crime. There has never been any significant ramifications against those who have employed these munitions.

While much of this game can be said to be about you as the player this scene is not. This scene is not meant to make you look inwards but instead to look out at the governments that run our lives and their flimsy justifications for committing such vile atrocities. Their attempts at moral absolution, to wash their hands of the matter, after all they had to do it! If not then they might not have won in the illegal war they started.

Few things in any media can be as horrifying as the knowledge that the people who allowed the usage of such weapons are free to do as they please while the victims are long dead having experienced unimaginable suffering.

So much more than gacha slop

I'd already seen some of the Umamusume anime and loved watching the beginning of a new era movie, so I was pretty excited to try out this game all be it without knowing any of the game play and I was very pleasantly surprised.

Coming into it I had assumed it would be like a lot of other gachas where you play for like a week or two, exhaust all the free rewards and then realise that the actual end game that you're now going to spend most of your time doing sucks and the game is secretly a glorified store front. Very few gachas have been able to stave off this fate long term, with many either shutting down, or eventually caving cough *fire emblem* cough.

About the only game that did manage to do this to my mind would be arknights. The introduction of it's own rouge like mode helped to avoid the common gacha game trope of not being able to play the damn game when you actually want to, and the fact that almost all content can be cleared with no high rarity units means that you don't actually have to dump endless amounts of time and money into it.

I can't speak to whether this game will become a glorified store front yet, what I can say for sure is it manages to nail it's game play loop. The game functions like that of darkest dungeon with you taking a some of your anime horse girls (who are all based on actual horses) through a series of race events and trying to complete various goals. Within this you will have to manage various stats making sure they stay on level enough to win, friendship levels with those who can help train them, their energy, their mood, and finally skills. It's a lot to keep on top of and that makes it so damn engaging. min maxing your horse, sacrificing a stat because you have a skill that can compensate, making sure you pick the best supporter cards for your horses specialities. Oh and each race is just that, a horse race that you can sit, watch and get hype as hell over.

It avoids the problem of locking you out of actually playing the game by simply having the game play actually take up a good chunk of time and having it need real thought the entire time. While you could probably blast through a single career in about 20 minutes some can take up to 50. You can then do almost 5 of these per day. That's a lot of horse racing at your finger tips. Not too mention the various side modes and multiplayer aspects of the game.

Finally the fact that it's gacha. This game will have you gamble and use perverse tactics to try and get you to spend money. Every gacha does this no matter how generous or free to play friendly. This game does not break this established mould but it is still very accessible without entering your card details. No matter the initial rarity of a horse they can all be gotten to 5 stars and you can get through a career and do fine in multiplayer with just a set of well levelled 1 stars.

My only complaint is having come from the beginning of a new ear movie, tachyon was no where near as unhinged as I would have liked. She does do the well what is it emote at you though.

A boring ass review of the division 2
Some games inspire me to write reviews that have some sort of thesis statement. An idea or concept that fascinates me. This game just doesn't really get those creative juices flowing. All I can muster is a by the numbers affair. The gameplay is solid. As my first major foray into cover shooters it felt intuitive to play (on a mouse and keyboard) and the movement to and from areas with just about everything that looks like cover being cover. The gunplay is snappy with good sound effects and animation. Enemies also react satisfyingly to your hits even if they don't get downed in a single headshot and the unique weapon skills can promote unique styles of play to an extent. The skill system further depends this with you focusing on one of these types of build. Red, blue, or yellow in a homage to mmo style DPS, tank, support roles. Each of these roles will have unique gear to far and stats to max out. The PvP is something I won't speak on as I didn't really engage with it. The story is a rather bland affair. Though having lived through 2020 it does hit a little close to home.

The one stand out feature of this game by a wide margin is the open world. I've never been to Washington DC but I imagine if I ever do I'm going to be pointing at things and going hey i know that from the division 2. Everything is rendered in a shockingly high fidelity for something from 6 years ago with some outstanding weather effects to really s other you in atmosphere. The city layout also feels incredibly natural. Everywhere I felt like I could go into I could. A small non descript ally would lead into a larger space containing an enemy encampment or maybe just some sweet loot. The campaign mission areas also feel naturally woven into the city leading into an adventure through museums, underground labs, shopping centres and more. It really helps to seel the idea of both what once was and what you as a division agent are trying to save.

One complaint I do have which falls outside of the game is the way that dlc and monetisation work. Mostly in that there is a "year one" pass which is different from the season pass you can get and can now only be found in the ultimate edition of the game which will require you to buy the whole game again if you want it. If like me you bought the game on a heavy discount this is no biggie. But if you are thinking of buying while not on sale have a think about the version you buy.

A game that hates you

I have a fascination with anti war media. Despite how many works claim to be anti war almost all of them still end up glorifying it to a degree, and this sense of achieving something for a greater good is entirely antithetical to war. No one ever truly wins in war. There are only ever losers. As such it can be difficult to portray this reality. After all a work such as this would be sole crushing. There would be no heroic deed done, only pain, loss, and suffering. But this is what war is like to experience. The only films that truly work as anti war works are those in which nothing is gained, everything is pointless, and you as the viewer are left feeling hollow.

As for Kane and Lynch 2? It's probably the only game that actually feels like it takes a position against not just violence but the very concept of the action game more generally. The game is clearly made by talented people. IO developed the hitman games after all. They know how to make killing people feel fun. The levels you go through feel well put together, logically laid out with cover that makes sense for the environment it's in and clear progression direction while not feeling entirely like a single bland corridor. The multiplayer mode while dead (unless you P2P) is genuinely an amazing idea that I'm shocked I haven't seen repeated. Finally the actual gunplay while mediocre feels snappy enough with a variety of weapons.

So why is it "anti violence"? The game manages to create an experience that is unenjoyable but not in a way that is fun or interesting. The player perspective is seemingly a third character who is recording the events of the game with a video camera and such there is some of the most aggressive screen shake I've ever seen in a game. It really does feel like you're watching someone run with a camcorder. It's so bad many need to turn it off to not get motion sick. There's also ♥♥♥♥ constantly smeared on said screen. The audio is compressed to all hell with effects sounding rather crunchy with an extremely bland sound track. Guns sound loud but not exciting. At no point did I care to hear or see a fire or reload animation like you might in another game. The gameplay consists of one long killing spree. No breaks, no downtime, only more violence. The enemies you find are all simply various flavours of person with gun. The gun they have may vary but the tactics they use do not. Every character is awful. Our two protagonist can simply only be described as vile. They ruin their own lives and those of everyone around them, even leaving you the player dead on a runway in Shanghai (sort of). The rest of the cast are also awful and only out for themselves. It's incredibly short being only around 3-4 hours to complete. Oh and it opens with the box cutter scene.

The game feels designed to be as off-putting as possible in a very deliberate way. The gameplay is not a huge power fantasy or an epic struggle against the odds. It's a bland affair of whack a mole. The violence is gratuitous but in no way cathartic (akin to that of say doom). After all why should you feel enjoyment from inflicting pain onto others? The story leaves with the main characters in a worse position than they started having achieved nothing. Everything was pointless and you leave feeling hollow. You are too old to be happy anyway.

This game is a fantastic. I don't really know how else to describe it. Everything adds to the experience being created. The 4th wall breaking dialogue, unsettling audio, strange distorted visuals. I spent 20 minutes playing this game. I spent far, far longer thinking about it.

I genuinely think this game can only be enjoyed while unemployed. The story is so padded and full of fluff that could simply be dropped. There are no stakes to anything that happens as Square is too afraid of upsetting people. The quest design consists of go here, talk to person, repeat. The combat for anything but high end content feels like a chore. And most importantly of all this game requires an unfathomable amount of time. I logged in most of my hours during the course of about 8 months and for that period it felt more like a job than something I did for fun.

I love watching reload animations. Whether it's on youtube, COD, heavily modded versions of fallout. There's something so satisfying and visceral about seeing a mag be removed, a bolt being ♥♥♥♥♥♥, and the squeeze of the trigger. I spent a lot of time in awe at the weapons in beyond citadel. There is a love for gunplay on display that I don't think I've ever seen matched. Every shot fired feels special. So it hurts all the more to not recommend this game.

First though I think I should cover what I do like about this game. The game play is great. Tactical game play on a boomer shooter is a very fun idea (you can also turn these off if they're not to your liking though reloading will still be a mechanic). The weapon sounds and visuals are also all top notch. Movement is smooth and the stages are extremely varied going from crap corridors to outdoor cityscape's (Though I'm personally not a fan of the sudden change in the last few levels to being solely about movement). The story/lore while rather difficult to discern due to it being translated from Japanese are still fun to unwind.

Now for the less good. Firstly while I like the level variety this does cause issues with a lack of a cohesive aesthetic with what feels more like a series of disconnected levels. Each level ends with a fall down a pit you cannot see the bottom of but this doesn't really seem to be much of anything other than a way to signify level transitions which is rather disappointing as some sort of "delve into hell" would have been cool to see. Some of the later levels also feel like a slog being both complex and large with no clear direction of travel. While something like doom 2016 feels like it has a constant obvious trajectory. This feels more like the mazes of much older boomer shooter. The bosses the come at the end of every chapter also aren't that interesting with you getting a special weapon a functionally just holding down the fire button while running around. The most fun I had with these was placing a large number of bomb satchels bellow one before detonating and seeing the health bar disappear.

Finally the elephant in the room. This game combines an obscene amount of gore with some rather naked anime women in what I have seen many online call a "gooner shooter", and while I think this is reductive as Beyond Citadel has far more to offer than it's T&A it is a substantial part of the game. The gore also differentiates itself from others in the genre by going into extremely graphic detail. You will not be seeing a red blob you will be seeing someones small intestine. It can really be difficult to stomach at time especially if you stop to see an enemy desperately try to keep their intestine from falling out while gasping for air. This combo will likely turn off a lot of people which is more than understandable. However, If you've got the stomach for it you'll at least have an experience you won't find anywhere else.

Quick performance note: I noticed a lot of frame drops when killing groups of enemies at once or hitting multiple enemy corpses and I'm running a rtx3080 and ryzen 5800x.

Both DS1 and DS2 are flawed masterpieces in their own way. DS3 deviates from this however. It's got an extremely polished gameplay experience with a lot of the idiosyncrasies (both good and bad) no longer being present in the game. This does lead to far fewer moments of frustration and more moments of genuine skill expression but it looses the charm and *soul* the earlier games have. That being said it sill compiles many of the best parts of earlier games. Combat feels fluid and bosses feel challenging but fair, the environments have fantastic atmosphere, and each level has an interconnected feel despite the games more linear design.
