Disco Elysium is a great story rich point and click game. The world it builds feels alive and full of mysteries. The world of Elysium is unique and a blast to explore. You wake up in a trashed Hotel room and can’t remember anything. Who are you? What happened in this room? Not only are you tasked with solving a murder, you’re also solving yourself out. Finding out who you are, where you work, live and what happened. This is a fascinating take and adds more depth to the game. Anytime you learn a bit more about your character, you also feel a stronger bond with it.

The characters you encounter in the game are memorable and each have their own unique identity. You really get to know people after a while and each time you come back, they might have something new to tell. Talking about the dialogue, for me, it is really a 50/50. The dialogue is interesting and really builds a relationship with the characters. You do really start to like some of them, and dislike others. It does exactly what it should do. But also a bit directionless. Characters have a lot of dialogue and you never know what you need in your investigation and what details you can ignore. Now I get it, this is part of the game and makes you think twice about everything they say but for me after playing the game for about 14 hours it resulted in a lot of confusion. Too many details to remember, and because now all of it is relevant, in fact most of it isn't. I just forgot important details. Besides, the writing is good but also a bit tedious at the same time. Conversations can feel overly long. As I said it’s really a mixed bag for me, I liked it, but at the same time I think it could lose some details and density. What doesn't help the dialogue either is you’re not only talking to a specific character, you are also in discussion with your own thoughts.

Dialogue does give you the freedom to be who you want. Convince people you’re a superstar for example and these dialogue options often lead to hilarious consequences. Nothing that changes the game too much, but you will notice the consequences.

Gameplay wise there is little to say. It’s a point and click, although you can also freely walk around. You mostly click on things and read.

Overall, I can see why this game receives the praise it gets, but after 14 hours I was done with it. To me the game, especially the dialogue is a bit too much at times, and the game should/could have been a bit shorter. On the other hand, the world it builds with the depth the conversations have is truly unique. You can lose yourself in it for hours upon hours. If you like dialogue heavy detective like games, I can recommend this, it’s just not for everybody.
