A far more standard shooter than the original. Missing almost all of the small mechanical nuances that made the original rewarding and fun to experiment with. Has the balls to be hard, which is nice. That isn't something the franchise has struggled with recently, so I personally expect that out of a modern Resi's higher difficulties. They simply failed to replicate, or properly replace, the way that Leon's kit interacted so tightly with the Ganados of classic RE4.

Interesting ideas are brought up only to be discarded for the rest of the story while redundant world building kills time and character beats are recycled ad nauseum. Zhen and Abby are not cults of personality, so it's hard to be invested in a story that is just them. Supporting characters show up about 3/4ths of the way through the story, and they almost add a lot to the dynamics of Zhen's clown uprising. However, they are promptly killed off almost as soon as they're introduced, and have little bearing on the plot.

I hate to be a plotcel, but Psycholonials gleefully wastes a ton of my time detailing ♥♥♥♥ like the number of Apache Helicopters/followers Zhen has obtained since the last time the reader saw her. Consequently, I just feel like I'm just returning the favor. Those timeskips are awful. They completely kill the momentum in every single chapter. I get that the concept of her uprising would take time to happen, but either have the balls to actually escalate things with no brakes or dig in and really take your time to develop the things that matter. Not the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Apaches. Please not the Apaches.

I seriously don't understand this particular story's fascination with the logistics of its setting. The concept is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous, own it. Focus on developing characters so I can actually get attached to the narrative. That's kind of why I thought Joculine brought so much to the table. She gives those logistics a face with a bit of bite. MENACE. And then when she's killed off it's just back to bland summaries of events that don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ matter to any character in the story when the story is supposed to be OFF THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ RAILS ALREADY. We only have NINE chapters bro, and where not making this happen.

Is psycholonials a love story? A story about an underdog revolutionary going mad with power? Is it about the corrupting influence of colonialism? An inspiring tale of escaping internet toxicity by just pulling the plug? Yeah, I guess it hits all of these beats at some point. Sometimes it even leaves me with a bit of food for thought. But the brevity, lack of nuance, and disconnected threads make leave this steak DRY! Unsatisfying. Where's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sauce? The one minute and 34 second reference to Metal Gear is not sauce buddy. Me actually getting invested in the feelings of your characters because they seem like people, that's sauce. I would've also accepted the "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brutalize my brain with hyperviolent anger fueled 2021 energy" sauce. That would've been cool too! Make an implicatory horror thing out of it. Those dream sequences are pretty excellent, and fooled me into thinking the story had something up its sleeve for a while.

If you're invested in Hussie as a writer, I would tentatively recommend this. I didn't hate it. I just wanted to like more about it. Also, the music is lovely. Give the soundtrack a listen, good stuff.

Whatever you do, do not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ write another line about Apache helicopters.

I was looking for a cute obscure RE4 clone, and I got a headache. This is probably the worst camera I've ever seen in a video game, period. There's a reason why RE4 didn't switch from fixed camera angles to over the shoulder aiming. It's disorienting and it feels like ♥♥♥♥, and that's not even counting the fact that the first half of this game takes place on a boat that giddily sways all over the place. Thinking about the game gives me minor pangs of nausea.

Lest you think that's the game's only problem, the gameplay is utterly unenjoyable. The enemy design is time wasting trash, the arsenal feels bad to use, and resource management doesn't exist in any capacity. Exploration is painful, yet crushingly linear. It's not even charming. There's simply nothing of value to engage with here beyond a macabre example of a game's design getting completely annihilated by tech bloat and feature creep. A tentatively interesting relic at best.

The PC port is pretty bad as well.

The thematic cohesion is a little loose which disappointed me a little at first, but after hearing the developer talk about his priorities I find it hard to care all that much. Cool atmosphere, small bits of funny writing, interesting food for thought in the ideas it kicks around with its little stories. The game does a good job at making the spaces that you find feel hidden; as if you've found things you aren't supposed to see. Until, you know, the game delightfully supplies you with cool developer commentary .

Enemies challenge you, you actually have to think about your tools and ammo (use all your weapons and your chainsaw), the pacing is much improved from 2016. Ballista boosting works wonders in conjuction with the momentum off a meathook jump and your dash. It's good for dumb shooty shoots whilst still providing a system with mastery involved. Try nightmare at least once in your life. It's also really pretty.

A blast from the past. Has some jank due to age and circumstance, and an inclination to imply more than show sometimes gets in the way of clarity/drama, but it really manages to outshine its flaws with a strong vision. A stylish visual presentation, memorable character writing, thought provoking subject matter, and a strong theme make this a story that will stick after the credits. Bangin' soundtrack too.

And for the love of god play Placebo chapters on the right side of the chapter select screen as you unlock them.
