Galaxy in Conflict is a massive expansion for Starbound with an extremely heavy focus on exploration, combat, and RPG mechanics in various worlds combining fantasy and sci-fi elements.

GIC is heavily inspired by the souls-like mix of melee and ranged combat of Remnant: From the Ashes, the loot system of Tarkov, and the fantasy elements of a grounded and grittier sci-fi Touhou.

This group's primary purpose is to function as an archive for update logs for people who are unable or unwilling to join the GiC Discord. This will help notify people on some matters.

Please keep in mind that there will be no support given here and that any inquiries should be redirected to the GiC Steam Discussions or the GiC Discord (although the latter is significantly faster in terms of response time and helpful info).

The Veteran’s Arsenal: Scrap Guns
Dev Period: January - February

When it came to asking the question of “how can Veteran archetypes (or just guns in general) be more fun early game” we looked at the G3 and said “yeah, that’s not enough”. While 60 shots is more than capable of unironically killing just about every person on Garden assuming you only spend 1 bullet per enemy... That’s kinda… eh? Not really much opportunity to sling lead. So we had to sit our asses down one day and start discussing on how to give modern guns a life early-game. While the tech progression moves from vaguely medieval to explicitly Japanese for the early-game we agreed that letting people use modern firearms (NOT blackpowder, as these are a different class of weapon) was perfectly fine in the form of “♥♥♥♥-tier” scrap guns.

Scrap guns had to be carefully tuned to be poor performance compared to later guns, but not simply just being “haha le low hit chance at any durability get ♥♥♥♥♥♥”. An early “sniper” scrap gun isn’t gonna be semi-automatic and hold 10 rounds, was the angle we were taking. Sounds braindead but these are genuine concerns when it comes to tweaking the early-game. Not just “yeah I guess you can find regular gunpowder literally everywhere now also it costs 5 scrap to make an AKM.” Again, sounds simple like “oh yeah duh” but so easily a “simple solution” can turn into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a process… like how just wanting to make early-game scrap guns actually threw a whole wrench in the works but more on that later in future blogs.

One of the many gun’s unique gimmicks is that Scrap Metal can be used to repair them, rather than requiring proper gun kits which offsets their high jam chance and low durability (which can easily dip proficiency if used too liberally). Scaling-wise it is possible to continue using scrap guns just for the sheer cheapness but you’ll pay for it in other ways with lower performance than normal guns.

But obtaining them? They couldn’t be just lootable. If you were to just find them, you’d become generally more powerful without much real investment. That resulted in reintroducing crafting after deliberation, something historically shunned upon as being a “useless mechanic that never worked in the past” which is funny because base GIC. That brought in another question of handling gunpowder on Garden which required a look into where it had to be placed.

These realizations eventually pushed two further development requirements: Scrap guns needed to be crafted, requiring an investment from the player. This involved setting up their economy costs as that also influenced its balance for both the gun’s performance and their ammunition. This, as well, would lead to the necessity of Garden’s restructure.

Both will be explained in further detail in a future blog on the specifics of GIC’s new crafting economy and how Garden went through… quarter of an overhaul.

Ultimately, scrap weapons exist in a handful of forms for the early-game. All of them have low durability and heightened jam chances but are uniquely able to use Scrap Metal to restore themselves:

Pipe Pistol – 5-round firearm based on the C96, loading 9x18mm pistol cartridges. Simple but slow.

Pipe Revolver – A 10-rounder firing pitiful .22LR. Reliable in the sense it can’t jam, but damage and firerate ain’t good.

Scrap SMG – A proper mag-fed 9x18mm 30rnd SMG that can output a hail of bullets with surprising effectiveness thanks to volume of fire but jams easily once it dips below “pristine” condition.

Scrap Shotgun – A reliable shotgun with not terrible hit rates but only loading two shells.

Scrap Bomb – An early albeit heavy grenade that has half damage compared to real grenades. Better than nothing.

Pipe Thumper – A cheap weapons platform capable of firing 40mm grenades, if you’re willing to spend the materials in the early-game for the tech and shells. Uniquely however, you can also launch Scrap Bombs instead of throwing them.

Scrap Chaingun – A highly suppressive machinegun firing .223 Remington, lacking the penetration of proper rifles but still powerful. Just be ready to expend a lot of bullets.

Pipe Rifle – Loads a hyper-massive… singular .243 Winchester bullet. Has a similar performance to breech-loaders. Accurate, powerful, but slow.

Pirate Sweeper – A revision of the Polis Quadlet, now firing massive 6-gauge (23x75mmR) shotgun shells.

Pirate Harpoon Launcher – A massive recoverable harpoon fired from a launcher platform, piercing shields and vaporizing poor sods.

Scrap attachments also exist as an early-game option for weapons, with later techs enabling most other attachments.

However, none of this mattered if they couldn’t even be fed with ammo, let alone created. The initial lap on garden provided the bulk of materials but after that gave no more materials until Eskhatos. Next “blog” will go into detail of how the crafting system was planned and the eventual restructuring of Garden as a whole. Eventually we’ll be moving around to other things like the new armors across the worlds and a bunch of other mechanics. Till then, we’ll ugh, see when I can get more of these written.

# A Catch-Up on 4.3’s Dev Cycle, Part 1

Hey fellas, apologies for the long gap in general announcements. We’ve been focusing hard on the current dev cycle but have finally reached that point where we can slow the hell down both because the scope-creep has been subdued and burn-out has reached its peak. We’ve shown our work in the development channels however, so if you’re curious you can have a gander there too.

# The Core Concept: A Summary

This update started from a single core concept: How can we make modern guns viable in the early-game, primarily Garden and Eskhatos?

From the surface standpoint, just adding in guns would disrupt the tech growth of the player when it came to melee and muzzleloaders. So the “simple” solution was the addition of scrap guns with ♥♥♥♥-tier performance. Great, these had to be balanced… how? With the loot system as-is, there’d be no gunpowder to make use of them when found. Add gunpowder loot however, and now they’re overpowered despite being “scrap guns”. Can’t be too ♥♥♥♥ either else it’s not fun for gun styles. Scrap guns couldn’t be mere findables, they had to be crafted.

Player-crafting was re-investigated to accommodate for an entirely new system of resource management beyond just “le ammo”. New materials added to loot tables which simulated an early “tech specialization” that was impossible to unlock all of it in one go i.e spend what you gathered in the first hour to tech into a smithy workshop and fletching, or go for modern ammunition and an emplacements workshop. Unique gear both utility and trinket-wise do appear in these tables too, so it’s not just “craft now, find later”. However, that had to be tuned to ensure it wasn’t so hyper-expensive and obtuse that you couldn’t “tech up” much early on, but not so fast that you could unlock all of it in the first 2 hours. The resource economy had to be treated incredibly delicately, as SB+mods has shown that it can be utterly pointless to interact with, or incredibly obnoxious real fast. GIC’s crafting is intended to supplement the diverse loot tables, not replace it. Guns are powerful even in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ package, but you ought to be ready to spend the materials.

But what good is crafting without the actual materials? While Garden had the overworld initially, there was NO RESOURCE GAIN after that initial “lap”. Once you began Bada’s caravan, everything from that point on gave ♥♥♥♥-all. This horrific revelation forced us to reinvestigate its structuring, leading to revised quests to give material rewards and some new areas outright. An important implementation was a rundown-lite repeatable raid against the bandits of the countryside. While materials are the primary gain, each successful run also unlocks new gear as well upping the difficulty which further improves loot drops from enemies, up to Tier 3.

Over the next couple weeks we’ll be going over most of the elements that were developed or majorly-tweaked over the last few months, from the addition of once-shunned mechanics like player-crafting, the reduction or outright removal of many penalties to trinkets to improve player-scaling, to the restoration of a myriad of forgotten GIC 1.0 mechanics like Blink-Assassinations and player-deployable/recoverable field guns. This of course also includes a lot of new content gear-wise to fill in what was missing with many playstyles.

Ever since 4.0, we’ve learnt a myriad of new things. Many of these in the search for making the gameplay more fun, as GIC is an Action-Adventure RPG after all, where the modern and ancient uphold themselves to a factor of viability. We pride ourselves on that simple fact: that we play our own project to have fun. It just turns out that simple fact also trickles down to other people’s enjoyment.

These “mini-announcements” are essentially just blogs though not during the exact time. More easily digestible information over what’s been happening rather than barfed out into one gigantic wall of text which arguably could be seen as off-putting to most.
