Half-Life Invasion released in 2003 is a French modification following after Half-Life's ending. Scientists who survived in a different part of Black Mesa are able to save you from the Gman and send you out on a new journey.

HL:I features tons of new content with over 16 weapons, 12 of them completely new and the remaining 4 being updated in some way from the original game. The player explores in a massive 4 chapters with around 10 full size levels each. A lot of visual/audio candy was added with an updated particle system, occasional special effects and some new music.

But what really stands out is the new armor and inventory systems. Your suit's parts can be damaged individually and using batteries which you now store in your inventory, you can either give energy uniformly to all parts or focus on repairing one single part. The player also now stores medkits in his inventory for quick use as well.

Being able to use your items when you need to is good, because HL:I is an extremely difficult mod, gunfights are far more deadly as the player and marines do a lot more damage. There is not tons of items go around and you will often find yourself hoarding medkits and batteries.

But for those who like a challenge, its a very special feeling when you overcome a tough battle, bobbing and weaving out of cover as you quite literally tear limbs off with your shotgun.

Its also a very story focused mod which is very nice. Things make sense and the world is well developed, feeling like a real place. There is a handful of scripted scenes and quite a bit of dialogue over your suit's intercom. The voice-acting although French seems well done and the English subtitles work quite well.

However not all is perfect, the mod suffers from some polish issues at points and it can be annoyingly difficult at times. One critical bug is that whenever you pause the game, you automatically use batteries or medkits if you are below 100%. This isn't enough to ruin the experience but it makes it more annoying than it has to be.

Another part which may turn some players off is a very late part of the game featuring a tank, while it had me quite amazed, it is in need of some heavy polishing.

Thankfully though, despite much needed polish in some areas, I feel safe saying this is one of the best modifications released and it surprises me people don't talk about it much. Its incredibly long but keeps you interested with a trickle of new guns, mechanics, plot info and little scripted sequences.

This is a beautiful modification despite its occasional bugs and lack of polish in some areas and its completely worth a try.
