Opposing Force is what happens when Valve lets Gearbox cook and somehow it works. Playing as the poor grunt who was supposed to be the tutorial enemy is a great twist. New weapons slap, the squad mechanics are surprisingly useful and the level design keeps throwing curveballs without overstaying its welcome. It feels like Half-Life but with extra chaos and a bit more attitude. Sure, it’s still very 1999 in places, but that’s part of the charm. Proof that expansions used to be actual expansions, not just a skin and a prayer.

I love this game even more than Half-Life 1. Sorry, Gabe, but Gearbox delivered a more dynamic and intense experience, with more aggressive enemies, a wider variety of weapons, memorable levels, and the added appeal of fighting alongside your brothers-in-arms. The story may be short and non-canon, but the gameplay is exceptional. I have replayed it many times since 2002. It was one of the first FPS games I ever played, and it will always hold a special place in my heart
