Wisdom Can Not be Bought

Greetings

I would like to put forth this month’s Public Referendum which would see us adopt a Career Progression system known as “Cursus Honorum”, a system used in the time of the Roman Republic and early Roman Empire.

The Cursus Honorum was the sequential order of public offices held by aspiring politicians in both the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire. It was designed for men of Senatorial rank. The Cursus Honorum comprised a mixture of military and political administration posts, with each office having a minimum age for election. There were minimum intervals between holding successive offices and laws forbade repeating an office. These rules were altered and flagrantly ignored in the course of the last century of the Republic.

The Career path started in 1 of 2 ways. It could begin unofficially with Military service by being a friend or an associate of a General and/or by being appointed a Military Tribune in one of Rome’s many Legions, or by beginning officially with the Political office of Quaestor.

This would change our system from its current career system were anybody can have any position with hardly any previous requirements being needed in order to hold that specific position, for example someone who just joined could attain a position of Consul.

Of course this would have to be adapted for Role Playing purposes and as such is subject to possible change if it is so required in order to better accommodate any issues that may arise from adopting this as a career progression system for the group. Such as those personal that held specific positions before the adoption of this system.

What follows is a simplified format of the order of the positions one can attain in the Cursus Honorum career progression system

Quaestor/Military Tribune (The first official and unofficial post of the Cursus Honorum respectively)

Aediles (While part of the Cursus Honorum, this step was optional and not required to hold future offices. Though the office was usually held after the Quaestorship and before Praetorship, there are some cases with former Praetors serving as Aediles.)

Praetor (Gained by previously being either a Quaestor or an Aediles)

Propraetor (Only Ex-Praetors could apply for this post)

Consul (Highest point within the progression system

Proconsul (Available only to those who had previously served as Consuls)

Censor (Only Consuls who had served as Proconsuls could aspire to take this position)

Tribune of the Plebs (Not official part of the Cursus Honorum, it did however require the holder to have served as at least, Quaestor/Military Tribune or Aediles)

Princeps Senatus (Though not official part of the Cursus Honorum it was usually held by previous holders of the office of Consul and former Censors)
