According to information from Deadline in the United States, the director of Moonlight would be in charge of a sequel to the CGI remake of the Lion King 2.

It was a piece of information that many people were waiting for, and here it is! With 2020 a catastrophic year that will leave a void in our hearts, Disney decides to comfort them a little for the beginning of 2021, which starts pretty badly, we’re not going to lie to each other. As for me, I would have preferred a real sequel to the film with a story about the reign of Kiara and Kovu but since Disney has totally stopped producing feature films in 2D, I believe unfortunately that this wish will remain only a dream... (I was quite disappointed by the remake of 2019, mainly because of the musics that were not up to par. We did not find the same magic as in the 1994 version.)

After racking up $1.6 billion in 2019 with its Lion King remake, Disney intends to continue the successful exploitation of its license with a sequel. This is at least what the American site Deadline tells us that the studio with big ears would have signed with the director Barry Jenkins to take the camera to shoot The Lion King 2. This suite, without title or release date, should explore Mufasa’s past while continuing the story of Simba, "in the manner of Godfather 2" believes Deadline knows. It is therefore to be expected that this feature film, which will take the breathtaking CGI images of the 2019 remake, will largely distance itself from the cartoon The Lion King 2: the honor of the tribe, released directly on VHS in 1998.

Jon Favreau, to whom we owe the remake of 2019, would not be part of the game for this new episode. The sequel would be given to Barry Jenkins, director of Moonlight, who won an Oscar for best film in 2017. Her latest production, If Beale Street Could Speak, also earned Regina King an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Decidedly busy, the American filmmaker has also shot a series for Amazon Prime Video: The Underground Railroad and is soon to box a season of the series The Knick. Note that, for the moment, Disney has not yet formalized the upcoming arrival of Lion King 2 after the announcements of Deadline. It is therefore too early to know when the film will be released.
