Final Fantasy XIV starts off in the weternmost of three great continents. You find yourself in a world blessed by life, but also struggling to continue on. A cataclysm brought on by the elder primal Bahamut nearly destroyed everything, but for the Heroic Sacrifice of Louisoix.

The Garlean Empire has fortified what territory it had encroached upon, but has halted it's incursions, for now. The beast tribes continue to keep the threat of Primals alive, and the only thing standing between all of this madness is you.

Final Fantasy features the 'armory' system, where your class depends on what weapon you have equipped. You can change roles any time outside of dungeons and battle. While nothing requires you to have a combat ready class leveled up, moving between zones designed for the various patches requires a quest which requires a combat class.

There are 3 main types of activities when it comes to gaining experience: Quests, FATEs, and Levequests.

The quests are split into Main Story Quests, or MSQ's, side story quests, unlocking quests, and side quests. These distinctions mainly differentiate between the goal of the quest. MSQ's advance the plot and offer large experience rewards, as well as armor and weapon options that are relative to the level of the quest. Side story quests are often part of a quest series that end in the unlocking of content via an unlocking quest. Side quests are small experience reward quests that sometimes offer general equipment options or food / potion rewards.

FATEs are open world activites of sorts. It is a designated area with a designated goal. There are 3 main types. Boss Fates, Combat fates, and item turn in fates. Completion can take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes, and the rewards, if you fully participated, are the same as a side quest as far as experience is concerned. It is like a side quest that you don't have to go back to town to turn in. These are very convenient to farm if you have a group of friends, and often there are special rewards hidden in special boss fates in the form of Minions.

Levequests are generic repeatable sidequest like activities. Instead of filling the game with pointless repeatable quests, you have a levequest that you 'check out' like a library book, complete, and then return for rewards. These are more often than not saved for leveling up crafting. You have a limit of 100 stored attempts, with 1 replenishing every hour. Don't be afraid to level using them!

Once you are done with leveling, you get to truly experience the world in and around Eorzea!
