The easiest way to play Berserker is to use claw weapons and emphasize Dexterity and Vitality. Focus will help you get more drops of ember and allow you to equip rings and pendants sooner.
You can literally just level up Shadow Burst as your only active skill and also level up most, or all, of the passive skills and do fine.
The more challenging way to play is to use the Ice skills and level up Focus more.
The very first character is the most difficult because you'll have to rely on a lot of blue weapons and you probably won't be able to get complete gear sets after the first lower-level ones in Act 1.
Save any good stuff for your next character, if you think you might want to play some of the other classes, as well.
We recommend that most people start with either Normal mode or Veteran mode. Elite mode just makes you do a lot more grinding in the game.
Synergies makes the game harder. Essentials makes the game much easier. If you want a more vanilla feel to the game that only makes it a little easier, I would suggest using a bag mod to expand your inventory as much as possible, and then The Toy Collector mod, which gives you access to the Mapworks from the first town (a small NPC sells you a scroll to open a portal for it). This way, when you reach level 30 or above, the weapons-and-gear merchant in the Mapworks will have a few better green and blue items than the regular town merchants. You will also have access to all of the good enchanters in the mod-expanded Mapworks. Here are some of the quality-of-life mods I use:
Ember Gem Upgrade
Variant Pets ver. 379
The Toy Collector
Deep Pockets ver. 8
Ember Gem Upgrade lets you put 3 identical gems in the transmuter to get one gem of the next higher level.
Variant Pets is just for fun. It has a huge collection of pets to choose from.
There are other bag mods that are also very good. You should research those yourself to see which one you might prefer.
In other words - most Guides for builds are decent - for any deeper info - refer to Guides that aim to study the less visible side of the game as additional info.

Any skill can function for TL2 - Elite Difficulty narrows the viability of creative options however as long as the Player maintains their Affixes from Equips - it's fine.
As a Beginner - can merely aim for the main dependable skills in any tree then take supportive skills to empower that play-style.
For Berserker - without referring to the Guides for now - that usually means that Shadow Burst is an excellent early survival-strike for new players - and the passive Blood Hunger supports direct-weapon strikes for the Health Leech when not using Shadow Burst.
Everything else in the Berserker's early-game is either a damage skill or a De-Buff skill - either kind will support the early builds very well.
After that - the new Player is free to consider branching into more powerful skills or supporting with more passives.

If comfortable with exploring or getting used to how the TL2 interactions function - these Guides can help to better grasp and plan around those interactions for any build potentially:
