I've also a suggestion on the name:
Since 'Byzantium' is a name created by westerners centuries AFTER the fall of Constantinople, and since the original 'Rhomaion' would be incompatible with the game style of anglicization of the names, the most sensible option would be in my opinion something like 'Rhomania' (adj. 'Rhoman') for the name of the empire, which is the most likely anglicization of the real name.
That is just a suggestion since I already have a personal mod with that modification that I use for my games, but if you are interested and wanted to spare the 5 minutes needed to replace the relevant lines, I can just share the code with you.
Another thing I think could be a nice addition was a storyline to the rivals bizantium eventually picks up. It seems that the way I play the game ends up being very linear, so some rivals are always there, basically the spanish and the mamluks. A story about beating them, important generals during the time(Having fictional events about these, that could give the option for you to choose between important figures to add to the empire) would be pretty nice, but I also understand that it would be a huge undertaking. Thank you for doing this!
