So after the play gets a diamond AVIAN says "You found a diamond! Be careful with it! We don't want it to turn into a living thing and create a civilization. Again." What is this referencing?

Personally I believe it's a reference to the Diamonds from Steven Universe, buuuuut who knows?

Actually, I think it's a reference to the origin story of the Avians.
The Avians were originally born from Avolite Crystals according to the official Starbound lore.
