I agree with you, the commissar is a pain.
I made it to the big base but died fighting the officer in there. I will definitely have another try but my advice to anyone playing this map is TAKE IT SLOW. Think before you do anything and use cover all the time! Another tip is don't waste muni, it's so scarce...
Use men with rifles to attract fire while Otto (and Friedrich, if you upgraded him with a Stg44) move in or flank.
And as said before, take it slow, this is a hard and big map.
