Alternatively, you could make a shaped shield; something like a tear-drop shape instead of a circle. So at the back you have like a radius of 20, but then the point is 200 away.
As for whether or not you actually SHOULD include one or not, I'd personally say yes, as long as it's not a very good one. Like you said, the fast-regenerating meat is supposed to act like ablative shielding; having a good shield would negate that. Having a poor shield would give the meat time to regenerate in combat, but it wouldn't be a full-out replacement.
I'd say a small, low strength, and moderatly cheap shield would be enough. You should call it something like "Skin" to fit with everything else. Just a small shield you could have a decent amount of surrounding the outer ends of you ship. Or, if possible you could add some kind of object that strengthins the durribility of blocks around it.
