The effect is more noticable with multiple generators. One generator doesn't seem to cause it, even 2 doesn't really impact my system. When I have 4-6 it starts getting bad. Small or large doesn't seem to matter, they both cause the problem.
Edit: So after a bunch of messing around with it I removed the storage files, the mod files and let it recreate it from scratch. For some reason that got rid of the lag inducing issue. I'm not entirely sure why as before it was updated it ran great as well but something didn't like each other. I did have custom values for the shields, perhaps that affected it. I'll play around with it some more but figured I'd pass along my current apparent fix for the sim speed drop.
More edits: Yeah something isn't quite as good as the prior version. My sim speed every 2 seconds drops to .5ish then goes back up to 1while the shield is idle. I put enough large shield generators to get up to 28.2M shields (filling the room I had prior to the update) then the module addons to fill out all of them and it just bounces whereas before it never flickered. the ram usage doesn't appear to have changed and I have plenty at 32GB but hte cpu flickers in time with it to maxing out the core of the i7 3.3GHZ I have. Again prior to the update it worked like a champ without this, it was the only thing that changed for the ship under build for active components. The real fun is in fact that even with all the blocks powered off it bounces around. I'm going to have to delete them just to function without hiccups.
If possible, I would recommend removal of sound effect from these blocks. If there is a way to stop this, please let us know.
EDIT: Workaround: I opened up the games local files and deleted the refinery loop sounds from the games audio folder. Problem solved until thursday when the update restores said files. I hope this helps in hunting down the bug.
yeah, the small grid/small shield generators are really noisy as well. i was messing around with them in my (offline) creative world. the sound loop is too fast. one was noisy, three was goodbye ears. sounds like a refinery trying to run on insufficient power. IMO, sound is not needed. if it can be done, either please remove sound or add a true/false to the cfg file to toggle it.
Getting this issue in my single player survival game as well. It seems to be related to the number of modules attached to the large shield generator. As long as there are 3 or less, in any combination of capacitors and flux coils, it works fine. But when a fourth is added, the shield strength starts to fluctuate between 0 and 1 tick of recharge. It seems like the shield is dumping its strength and getting stuck in a recharge from scratch cycle for some reason.
This also causes the sound from the generator to cycle rapidly and be very loud and annoying, which may be what others have experienced. Normally I find a fully charged shield to be fairly quiet, but the rapid discharge/recharge cycle is about 3 times as loud as a refinery.
I'll do some further testing tomorrow to give you more details.
Edit: Yup, it was user error. Turns out one of my reactor mods got an update that rebalanced the power generation and my grid was just short of the required power.
I have this problem as well. They're constantly noisy and since they use hte basic refinery sound I can't get rid of one without the other. It is a bit problematic honestly as it really ruins the fun having to either turn off sound or have shields.
