I then reloaded my problem game and the population tracker wasn't working in that game. So I went back to my game where it was working, and when I re-loaded it, the tracker wasn't working for that game! That made me think that the problem arises when I load a game, so I started another new game, loaded the turn 1 auto save and the population tracker still worked.
I think there was just something wrong with that save file so I deleted the whole thing and am starting over with a careful eye on the tracker. If the problem comes up again I'll take screenies. Thanks for the reply!
Great that you got is solved. Sometimes one has to start from scratch even though you dont know exactly what was the problem. It's better when the issue is clearly visible so you can stop it in time, and not so good when it is a subtle issue that has been there for a long time before you see it.
