My Client State did what...
I am just curious as to my situation in Rome. It is early on in the game, Epirus kept moving through southern Italy, conquering my territories and creating client states that spawned large armies that immediately joined the fight against me. With Epirus, Samnites, and Campanian armies attacking Italia, I found it extremely difficult for my one army of low-tier soldiers to start to turn the tide. I was luckily able to defeat the Samnite stack at one of my cities which allowed my army a brief opportunity to take the Samnite capital. I make them my client state and then they spawn a new army. I try to get them to declare war on Epirus with no luck. I start to make my way to Campania and just as my army gets close to their target, the Samnites declare war on me and conquer one of my Italian territories. What is going on here? Why do the client states fight for Epirus and not me? Why am I facing four (Epirus has two stacks now) stacks of armies by turn 8 in the game? I am playing on Normal/Normal Difficulty and any help would be greatly appreciated. :Monokuma2_DGR:

I advice you to conquer those factions regions at this early time, dont make them client states. Client states can rebel and declare war on you if they dont like you and if they think you are weak, especially if you ARE weak AND have STRONG enemies (like Epeirus). It gets even worse if the client states like your enemies.

Im curios as to the reasons that Epierus could conquer your territory and make client states out of that. What could be happening is if they liberated a region from you and then, because the liberated faction tend to love their liberators alot, Epireus had a much easier time convincing them to become client states? But then when you conquer them and force them become client states (that was what happened, right?) then they dont like you very much, but they still love Epireous....

Epireious is your great enemy in the beginning, just like in real life history. Their first army is very dangerous in that they have some "Super Heavy" elephants that will really smash your feeble troops around. Consider this your manhood test for your DEI initiation ;) You need to destroy Epireus army and throw them out of southern Italy. To deal with their elephants you can use javelins or flame arrows (though I dont think you have access to flame arrows in the beginning?). Elephants, and especially Super Heavy, has lots of health and armour and javelins penetrate armour and take away lots of health, so they get scared when that happens. They also scared of fire. If you have no javelins or flame arrows then ordinary slingers can actually also work against elephants, it just takes a lot longer time. Use multiple spearmen units, preferably in phalanx formation, to fight the elephants while you pelt them with missiles from multiple missile units (if slingers use at least 3 slingers for 1 elephant unit, and it will still take time. Thankfully slingers are cheap af). Once they go out of control you can pull everything away from them. You'll still take losses as this isnt the most effective way to deal with elephants, which is without a doubt javelins or fire.

Later when/if you conquer Sicily you'll be able to recruit "Gastraphetes" which was a missile unit that apparantly used a type of early forerunner to the crossbow. They do insane damage, has super long range and tons of ammonition. Gastraphetes for this reason are also extremely effective against anything really, but definitely also elephants especially if you use multiple units of them and target one elephant unit at a time and then pair that with a general with missile damage skills and traits... the elephants wont even get near your forces before the go out of control (of course this is later in the campaign you will have build your way up to all this).

Considering what has been happening in your campaign you may need to start over as the beginning of the DEI campaign is already a difficult time even when you do things right, and so now you may be royally screwed. (Or you could try to play it through and if you get overwhelmed then you'll at least die honorably like a true roman!).

Ps. no I cant spell Epirous correctly.

Thank you for your time and your advice! You are probably right regarding the liberation of the regions. I think I will frustratingly keep playing the campaign to see how long Rome can hold off. Take care! :friendship:
