Troops promoted to companions
After awhile or when you exit the screen, assign them to a duty, the troop promoted companions disappear from the companion list. You can still equip them with gear but theyre no longer counted as companions in the list, can no longer make a party with them or upgrade their skills.

companions in trading caravans also bug out and get stuck in a City when you disband them.

EDIT: the Solution that worked for me was from @Achilles, downloading the detailed character customization mod brought my companions back. I didnt have to rename them or change their appearance. just having the mod put their name in the hero list.

I have trouble loading saves with promoted companions like this. I've had to roll back hours.

i gave up, since they always will disappear every time you load a game after recruiting a new one.

tho ive had to hire back some of the existing companions to fill out the engineer/ medic role. but soon enough i'll be able to do both lol

I'm in the process to copy the technique everyone does in TOR here. It's by putting them in a caravan, and let them get defeated and captured. The companion will retreat to a tavern/inn and you will be able to recruit them. Hopefully that works. XD

the entire feature is not working properly. for me anytime a troop might be upgraded to companion, the game crashes. right at the instant where the popup would occur after the battle.

I was able to fix a companion in my party with this by using him as the leader of a blue quest delegation. When he completed the quest and returned I could open his skills panel and assign roles again.

Is it permanent or do you have to repeatedly do it every reload?

Safe to say that it is permanent.

Get the detailed character customization mod, when you promote a soldier change his name and appearance. I found this allows you to keep them and they stay in the encyclopedia like a normal person. I currently have a Portuguese man running around terrorizing villages in my clan.
yeah i got the same issue

Unfortunately for me their name doesnt even come up as an option for that.

ive made 3 into party leaders, 1 of them disappeared from the companion list. but theyre at least still in the vassal list when i create an army
