Death from radiation poisoning should be a slower process; exposure to radiation with no protection should give the player worsening symptoms that lead to death in less than a week. Using a gas mask should mitigate the worsening of symptoms. With that, the gameplay loop would be more like quick loot runs on the surface, and that would be tens of times more fun. Also, if the surface didn't turn into ash entirely, it would also be nicer.
