Configuration Guide
Last updated September 22nd 2025, v2.0.4

UNDER CONSTRUCTION
I will be adding to this guide over the coming weeks when I have time. Thank you for your patience :)

Recommended Barotrauma Settings
Output Settings
  • Music volume: 0% - 10%.
  • Dynamic range compression: Optional - Enable if things get too loud when there's a lot of sounds playing. Disable if you want everything to be as raw and loud as possible.
  • Voice chat volume: 100% - 200%.
  • Directional voice chat: Enabled.
  • Voice chat attenuation: Optional - Enable if voices are too hard to hear over sounds like vents.
Input Settings
  • Input mode: Voice activity.
  • Microphone volume: Reduce until the voice activity meter fills up to no more than roughly 70% when speaking at a normal volume but still hits 100% when yelling. The greater this contrast, the better that reverb thresholds and settings like "Scream Mode" (Voice tab) will work.
  • Cutoff prevention: 250ms - 500ms.

Important Settings
Focus Target Audio (General tab): This setting moves the position of your ears to whatever target is focused by the camera. If enabled, controlling a turret transports your ears outside the submarine. In this scenario, you can no longer hear what's happening around your character - with the exception of local voice chat (toggleable with the "Hear Voices On Turrets" option in the Voice tab).

Unsubmerged Distortion Gain (Dynamic tab): If you find gunshots too loud, reducing this setting will help.

Indoor Reverb Strength (Dynamic tab): The easiest way to control the "echo" effect for indoor areas.

Scream Mode (Voice tab): This is a fun setting that makes local proximity chat distance scale with volume. Scream for help!

Custom Radio Presets (Voice tab): It's worth messing around with the radio filter to see what you like. There's a handful of preset options to start with.

Submerged Pitch (Pitch tab): If you don't like sounds being pitched lower in the water, this is the setting to change.

Show Performance (Advanced tab): If you're interested in how many frames per second the mod is costing you.

Custom Sounds (Advanced tab): More advanced to use but very powerful - apply distortion, sidechaining, and mixing to any sound in the game on an individual level.

Customizing Sounds
Being able to manually edit the properties of sounds is a powerful tool for customization and necessary for guaranteed compatibility with other mods.

The properties of a sound can be modified by inserting a fragment of its filename into a list.

The basic process is as follows:
  1. Find a uniquely identifiable keyword in the filename of the sound.
  2. Find the property you want to change in the Advanced tab.
  3. Add that keyword to the property's list.

Q: How do I find a uniquely identifiable keyword for a sound?
Enable "Show Playing Sounds" in the Advanced tab. When your sound plays, it's full filename will be listed. I recommend taking a screenshot so you have time to read it.

Available Properties
  • Custom Sounds - This list is unique because it requires entering more than just a keyword. Instead, a single keyword is associated with multiple properties bundled together for convenience.
  • Ignored Sounds - Ignore all effects and processing.

What's the purpose of the "Bubble Ignored Names"?
Lord Tomate 17. mar. 2024 kl. 18:59
Hey, just installed this mod, looks really really good! Can you explain what low pass frequency is to someone that knows nothing about sound-stuff?

Also, while wearing a diving suit and underwater I can scarcely hear any tool I use, or even gunshots, is this intended?
Plag  [udvikler] 17. mar. 2024 kl. 22:49
@Lord Tomate - Sure! Sounds contain a range of frequencies, with higher frequencies (treble) contributing to their detail and clarity. A low-pass filter only allows low frequencies (bass) to pass while blocking the higher ones. This results in a muffled sound, in the same way a nightclub's music sounds muffled from the outside; the walls prevent higher-frequency sounds from passing through. The lowpass frequency you choose for this setting represents the cutoff point where the filter starts to block the above frequencies.

As for your 2nd question, yes, that's intended. If you would prefer those sounds to be less muffled, you could try adding them to the "Pitch Ignored Sounds" list (some sounds are pitched lower underwater or while wearing a suit, causing even more clarity to be lost from the sound). For a more direct approach, you could increase the "Lowpass Frequency" setting to allow more frequencies through globally, or you could add those specific sounds to the "Water Ignored Sounds" list to prevent muffling them underwater (recommended approach). For more details on this process, see the last question in the FAQ.

Would you recommend using the "directional voice chat" option in the audio settings or not?

Thanks for a great mod!
Plag  [udvikler] 28. mar. 2024 kl. 18:34
@JERN - Yes. Most sounds in the game are directional, so I recommend voice chat being directional too.

Hello ! Amazing mod, can't wait to try it out for an upcoming RP campaign with friends. Definitely a great one to have with the new traitor missions !

One question though, just to make sure : sounds from mods cannot be whitelisted from the audio filters, correct ?
Plag  [udvikler] 28. apr. 2024 kl. 4:36
@Snubby - Thanks for the kind words, I hope you enjoy the mod! I'm happy to say that all sounds (modded and vanilla) are processed by Soundproof Walls and are fully customizable.

Oh nevermind, I figured it out... For some reason during my testing, the settings stopped applying in real time, so I thought it was just not working. Weird ! Still applied when I went to the mod tab and reapplied it.

Don't know what caused that, but now you know it can happen ! I'll let you know if I find out more. :3 Take care !

How do you change these settings on a dedicated server? Is there a config file?
Plag  [udvikler] 26. juni 2024 kl. 13:14
@Target Practice - You'll be glad to know that even on a dedicated server, the settings can simply be changed from the in-game menu. For more information on how that works without a steam host, here's a quote from the version 1.1.2 patch notes:

"Previously, in dedicated servers, the first "admin" (client with ban permission) to connect to the server had config priority. Now, if another admin changes a setting, they will take that priority, allowing multiple authorized people to make changes to the config. A backup of the latest config is stored server-side and enforced on players when no admins are online (assuming the Sync Settings option is enabled).
Additionally, the name of the client who updated the config is printed in the console."
