I actually haven't experienced Pikeman in the game much yet but want to. Something to maybe answer your question- there's a "Better Pikes" and more helpfully the accompanying "Breakable Polearms" mods which may help you. I recommend upping the durability of your polearm in the mod settings. It breaks pretty quickly which is realistic I suppose but sucks when it breaks first thing in battle.

The Breakable polearms mod may be the nerf you're looking for.
