Do I have to defeat bosses to progress?
As the title says, can I get the resources without defeating them? It took me half an hour to find enough illuminated liquid to make one boss summon item only to instantly get one shot, I don't have to patience for that but I want to explore the other worlds.

So how do I get the items to allow me to reach the other planets?

You need to defeat Cosmos Nemesis and Evolapis to make superstorm EPP, and defeat Aeon Timepiece to mate trinity EPP.
I suggest you use arcana's armor(for the great HP boost) and boost elemental resistance through some other mod like FU, these will make two illuminate-tier boss easier.

In this version, yes. At least I don't find another way to get cosmo tendril, morphosis egg and aeon core.
If you are using an old version, then maybe no, EPPs are added in 1.0.

How do I find the bosses I need to kill to get the EPP? for vermelion and other planets?

Timeless planet, find a tower dungeon(much faster with MPI), and go to the top.
