Question about exhaust sounds (Argosy compared to FLB)
Very much enjoying this truck (and your others)! :-) Got a question that's been bugging me, though, that I'm hoping you can answer, Harven.

I've noticed that, compared to the FLB, the Argosy's exhaust sounds a lot louder/"throatier". Why is this? For instance, going from an FLB with the CAT 3406 to the Argosy with the CAT C16, I can tell that the engines are making essentially the same sounds, but in the Argosy it's nearly drowned out by a loud exhaust "ripping" sound that's not noticeably present in the FLB (not at nearly the same level anyway).

I was surprised to find this, since the Argosy succeeded the FLB in real life and the redesign focused a lot on driver comfort; I'd expect the Argosy to have much better noise isolation. Is the way it's portrayed in the mod realistic? Is it just a question of the exhaust being configured differently on the specific real-life trucks that donated the sounds for the Argosy and FLB ("wider pipes" on the Argosy)? Or is it a question of the software mixing the sound banks differently?

I've noticed a similar thing with the stock game's Pete 389 vs. KW W900. Even though they're running all the same engines, and their exhaust pipes look essentially the same in-game, the W900 in-game is way louder, and it's all throaty exhaust sound. Not having much real-life experience with heavy trucks, I just assumed the W900's noise isolation wasn't as good, but now that I'm seeing this on the Argosy I'm wondering what accounts for this.

Explanation for Ethanjoe89: Okay first thing you are using a C16 CAT on the Argosy, that is a plain loud engine with a loud turbo as I recall. Usually intended for 3 axle drive heavy haulers (Argosy offers an all wheel drive with power steering axle configuration as 6x6. The VAST majority of Argosy had Detroit engines and those seem much quieter to me. Also note that the DD13, DD15, C13, C15, C16 are all cylinder sizes. Also please note the exhaust on the W900 you were using is right by the drivers door and not behind the cab or underneath the truck. The Argosy is behind the cab-over-engine body which is less loud than the W900 next to cab design. I have seen large bore volume engines in heavy construction more than over the road freight configurations.

Good to know about the C16 being just plain loud in real life. It certainly has a right to be given the incredible power it puts down! Once I'd driven the Argosy for a while in the game and gotten used to it I found I didn't mind it, but it sure caught me by surprise at first after driving the FLB with its (relatively) more "tame" sounding CAT 3406. :-)

I did get the distinct feeling that even the comparable engines (C15 vs. 3406 and Detroit 600 vs. Detroit 600) were louder in the Argosy than in the FLB, but maybe that's just my mind playing tricks on me and/or differences in how the sounds are balanced between the different mods. I'm looking forward to trying the Argosy again with the new sound attenuation system the ATS/ETS2 1.4.3 update introduced, since it seems to have improved the balancing and made sound levels more realistic overall. I haven't gotten back to my Argosy yet under 1.4.3 but my FLB sounds louder than it did under 1.4.2, which is probably realistic, so there's probably less of a difference now.
