For defense, 2 artillery units behind a base shield and a nice amount of air gunships is ideal. HMP's and MAF's are good. An initial spawn of droidekas for rush caps as well, with your air units floating back and forth between enemy attacks, repairing behind your base shield as needed. Most other CIS units can be ignored for defense since CIS is more aggressive, attack oriented, and not really great at defense.
Seriously, HMP's and MAF's will hard-carry CIS battles to victory if you manage them well. HMP's are unimpressive on their own, but in large packs of 6 or more(remember they spawn in pairs), they will shred.
