apparently it's based on your faction reputation, based on this video, but I'm not clear on how it's done, because I'm not sure what the minimum faction requirements are. does it need to be positive? does it need to be over +50 rep? I've built some nice architecture on a town, yet I'm still not able to invite people in (I end up trying to use Proselytize, but it just gets me shoved around).

Beguiling works too, but yes. I generally stick to Proselitize and Beguile to recruit people into my little fortress now.

yeah, I've finally managed it with some of these people in Yd Freehold who I've been targeting, and it works (more or less) if you're able to get your rep at least be 50 or so (I've actually had faction rep for a group go below zero, which surprised me). not exactly sure what I did to change things, though — I ended up with such high ego I was expecting to be able to bulldoze people using proselytize, but nope, suddenly that option to spend faction reputation appeared. it's odd, but I'm not complaining too much. now all I need are some god-danged bookbinders and/or scribes and I'll be set...
