Though seriously your first mistake was trying to game on anything that isn't Windows. Only masochists do that deliberately.
And there are some people around who really do appreciate the challenge.
My adoption of McCoy's guide is thus:
mod @e_001_ancient_empires_master_pack1.pack;
mod @e_002_ancient_empires_models_pack2.pack;
mod @@e_ancient_empires_supply_system.pack;
I at least receive an error message after the first "Attila" loading screen stating:
"Crash
VFS error: could not load the mods.
It looks like the mods in your data directory do not well play together. Consider withdrawing them and reintroducing the them one by one to see what the offending combination is..."
=> Yet, disabling the "supply system" file by setting it between "# ... #" or the pack-files doesn't seem to change anything.

However "Ancient Empires" not being available through moddb yet, for now I can not give it a try.
I just stumbled upon the same issue OP mentioned in their first post, although there is a direct link[www.twcenter.net] available at the twcenter forum by now; that might fix any occuring launch issues with the mod.
Will update this post as soon as I finished downloading the monstrous amount of assets for this mod.
Btw, this particular reply didn't age too well since the release of Proton. :^)
UPDATE: Still experiencing the same crash on launch. Big F.
