Quick question regarding existing characters
How will this mod affect my existing character? Will it leave that character alone? Or will I have to not play it in order to get the mod not to affect it? I assume it would be best to start a new character.

Yes, starting a new character would be best. As long as you never actually start playing with your old character, the mod will not affect him/her. However, even if you do accidentally load your old character up, the effects will still work, and you will also be able to remove them and load up your character again by following the directions in the description.
