@TurtleShroom: I wouldn't say they're *supposed* to be bats but rather inspired by them, like many of the other species.
@Kennywnorth: Bat ears vary in size; there are comparably small ones.
And yeah, I basically use them as a species living in jungle worlds with treetops so dense barely any light reaches the bottom (hence the sort of parallel evolution of bat traits). Religious, militaristic and xenophobic they see themselves as superior to others and as chosen to dominate the galaxy. So they enslave, purge and enjoy to engage in wars.
But feel free to let their looks belie their character, make them pacifistic and friendly. I did enjoy to take the cute little butterflies and turn them into the devouring swarm, haha.
@TurtleShroom: Same, I always just thought of them as "the most hideous thing in Stellaris."
