HELP NEEDED FOR BETTER ARMOR

I have been working on a IFV. This is my first tank/ground vehicle. When i tested it by shooting at it, it gets shot almost all the way through, i have about 3-4 weight blocks on its flank and i cant add more without making it look unrealistic since its replicating a real tank. any suggestions on how to make the armor stronger without adding more layers of weighted blocks on the side?

are you firing HE at it? HE ignores armour and generates a sphere of damage

i have tried both HE and AP, they still are causing internal damage. also, is there any way to reduce the make HE deal less damage as well? or is it basically impossible without putting just a giant barrier of blocks between the blast and the target?
