Missing a trick? RE2
I'm coming back to Empyrion after a while away and I've noticed that creating mini hover bases instead of making full on bases seem to be what players do when starting out, but many of the blueprints require cobalt ingots which my portable constructor can't make...

so right now, I want to use the starter blueprints, but it seems I have to create a base with a bigger constructor to craft the ingots to make the starter blueprints? but then that defeats the objects because then I'll already have a base.

Is there something I'm missing? Is there another way to get cobalt ingots? (and other types like titanium)

You are not limited to only puting ingots in, you can throw anything that contains cobalt into the factory.
Cobalt is needed by for SV drills and SV mobile constructor, but not for HV constructor.
So two options, salvage automatic doors to get cobalt alloy and throw that in the factory or bring in a simple HV with a constructor to craft ingots if you have already mined the ore

Alternatively just build a simple SV and go into space and mine the cobalt asteroid in space.

That doesn't help with crafting cobalt ingots, as the SV constructor requires ingots

You don't need a constructor on the SV to mine cobalt asteroids or cobalt on the moon. You'd just need to dock a HV or bring the ingots back to a HV on the planet.

The OP's original question was how to get cobalt ingots not how to get cobalt ore.

It's real simple. Make an HV. Make a Mobile Constructor. All of these things can be made in a portable constructor. Then make Cobalt Ingots.
I don't understand why everyone else is making this so complicated...

Everything except SATHIUM ingots is constructable in your SV constructor. To make the Sathium ingots for a CV warp drive, Just spawn in a Base that is a Small generator, fuel tank, Ammo box, and large constructor ONLY. Make your ingots, then delete the base. You will not get a Base-attack in the 3-5 minutes required to do this.

The Grindfest server has modified the scenario in a good lesson for Ravien and Vermillion, with the portable constructor being able to process Cobalt ingots. Forcing the player to spawn in an HV only to process 75 cobalt ingots every single playthrough is obnoxious, and having to explain to players how to get around these arbitrary progression road blocks is a constant annoyance to server admins. Needing a large BA constructor to process just 40 sathium ingots for making your starter CV is equally irritating and non-sensical. Hopefully they will eventually remove both of these requirements from the base scenario. I encourage people to give the Grindfest server a try, theyve made a lot of logical fixes to the scenario that make it more playable, as well as fill-in a lot of voids and unfinished parts of the galaxy.
I'm actually a big fan of grindy games. but theres a difference between hard-won advancement, and annoying and arbitrary roadblocks.

straight on from starter you have the polaris trade station. Kill some nasties in their territory and do some trading (they like watercontainers and dual fuel cells among other things)

Keep killing nasties until you are friendly /good with them (doesnt need to be honoured but it helps with prices). Now you can use their teleporter and hop over to one of the CB802N stations or one of the space stations (do buy an insulation booster at the starter trader)

Buy ingots there whatever you like : cobalt, erestrum, zascosium, gold, platinum, neodymium, sathium Lots of stuff to buy there, just grind up the money and sell them what you dont need

If it would be impossible to get cobalt you couldnt leave starter

You can also salvage wrecks (growing plots give cobalt alloy yoiu can use in the blueprints) for the stuff you need

Just because other players build HVs why would you? Ofcourse there can be the problem of base attacks but you can also build a base in space outside of enemy range and be perfectly safe there.
