HBS hasn't made any updates to any of the SR games lately, and probably won't release any more updates or patches. Future games will likely be on an entirely different engine. That's both good (there won't be future changes to break mods) and bad (no new games/DLC probably means fewer players looking for mods).
Unfortunately, there isn't a "definitive" version of the editor/engine. Hong Kong added some cool new features (Matrix upgrade, new animations, etc.), but also removed useful things from Dragonfall (all the old music tracks and many of the old models). You might want to review this wiki page[shadowrun.gamepedia.com] for an overview of the tradeoffs. Personally, I'd pick either Dragonfall or Hong Kong, they both have a lot of advantages over the original Shadowrun Returns editor.
In general, the modding scene is really quiet right now, but I wouldn't be worried about future updates breaking your work again.
that is a point as well : i should wait for a new kind of SR games
i have only tried the first editor (despite i own the rest), so, as you say, if i learn the new one and make a lotta work for a few players it's kinda sorry :/
