Well, I know this: If in Tome the tender asset is replaced with the model of an engine (I did this to get double-headed engines), then that 'tender' also exhibits the smoke of the new engine. Therefore I believe that the smoke effect is baked in to the engine model. It might be done some other way, but I doubt this is possible without diving into the game's assembly.
