I was thinking the left fule is connected directly to the base.

This is mirrored on the other side. There is one Fuel point for each team which requires 2 connection points and one which 1 connection point. The map is not exactly mirrored nevertheless. The left river side is easier to defend once taken, but easily cut off. The upper right ressource points are harder to defend, but also harder to cut off.
